A Study on the Korean Old Maps in The British Library

이 논문은 영국국립도서관에 소장된 한국본 고지도를 조사하고 분석하여 각 지도가 지닌 특징과 지도사적 가치를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위하여 우선 영국국립도서관이 한국 고지도를 수집하게 된 역사적 배경과 보존 상황을 살펴보았고 각 자료별 특징과 의미를 분석하였다. 조사의 결과 영국국립도서관에는 모두 20종의 한국 고지도가 소장되어 있고 판종의 형태는 필사본 지도가 18종으로 대부분을 차지하고 있었다. 지도의 유형과 계통분석을 통하여 살펴본 결과 동람도식 지도, 정상기 계통, 신경준 계통의 지도, 필사의 수준이 높은 김정호의 대동여지도를 확인할 수 있었으며 한글로 지명이 표시된 지도 2점도 확인할 수 있었다. 새로 확인된 지도들은 한국 고지도 연구의 마디를 이어줄 귀중한 자료로 평가된다.

This paper is to review rare Korean maps and atlases preserved in the British Library and examines the characteristics of each map and the value of the cartographic history. We first looked at the historical background and preservation situation in which the British Library collected rare Korean maps, and analyzed the characteristics and meaning of each data. With this study, we found that there were 20 Korean ancient maps in the British National Library, and 18 titles of maps were manuscript. Based on the type and systematic analysis of the map, it was confirmed that they were the map of Dongramdo, the map of Jung Sang-gi, the system of Sin Kyeong-joon, and the Daedong-yeojido of Kim Jeong-ho with high transcriptive level, and also checked two maps marked with Korean letters. The newly identified maps are evaluated as valuable heritage that will continue the link of Korean ancient map research.
