Objective: A cochlear implant is a device into the inner ear, which is expensive for implantation and rehabilitation. Implantation using a device is very important for rehabilitation, and correct recognition of device is a key factor for successful implantation. For this, it is necessary to confirm the educational effectiveness for pre-service education. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of pre-service education on the understanding of cochlear implants. Participants and Method: Twenty healthy adults without hearing loss(m: f=6: 14, mean 33.8 ± 14.43 years) participated. The questionnaire was conducted before and after education, and responses were measured on a 5-point scale. The questions consisted of 5 subcategories and 20 items, including device understanding, cosmetology, surgery and rehabilitation costs, social attention, and audiology, rehabilitation. Pre-service education was conducted individually for 30 to 40 minutes, including the concept and structure, candidacy, rehabilitation, and precautions. Results: The first and second scores were 2.94 and 4.43, 2.6 and 2.83, 2.26 and 3.85, 2.5 and 2.93, 3.34 and 4.3, in same order, respectively. Statistically, significant changes were observed in understanding, cost, and rehabilitation. Conclusion: Pre-service education can provide useful information in the categories of device understanding, cosmetology, cost, social attention and rehabilitation.
