이슬람 세계가 신라를 황금의 섬으로 인식한 관념적 연원

Conceptual Reasoning Behind Silla becoming the Golden Island in the Medieval Islamic World: An Epistemological Analysis of the Legend of the Golden Islands at the Eastern End of the World

본고는 중세 이슬람 세계 문헌들이 신라를 황금의 섬으로 묘사한 연원을 기존의 실증적 연구방법이 아닌 인식론적 관점으로 접근해 분서한다. 중세지리 지식은 경험이나 검증으로 다 채우지 못한 틈새를 관념과 상상이 메웠다. 중세 무슬림들에게 지대한 영향을 준 고대 외래 문명들에게는 ‘동쪽 세계의 끝의 바다 위의섬’이 있다는 인식이 널리 유행했고, 이 전설은 초기 이슬람 지리에 그대로 이식되었다. 이 ‘황금의 섬’은 본인들이 인지한 동쪽 세계가 확장될 때마다 새로운 장소에 투사되었고, 무슬림들 역시 지리상의 동쪽 변경이 넓어지면서 전래된 장소를 새로운 곳으로 치환했다. 신라의 특산품을 실증적으로 조사했던 당대의 무슬림 상인들은 신라의 금에 관해 언급하지 않았다. 하지만 이슬람세계의 학자들은 세계 지리에서 ‘세상의 동쪽 끝바다위에 자리한 산이 많은 섬’인 신라를 ‘황금의 섬’이라고 하였다.

This paper aims to analyze the reason why Silla became the island of gold in medieval Islamic texts relating to the legend of the Golden Island, East of the Chinese Sea (at the extreme East). The medieval Islamic world continuously and almost unexceptionally described Silla as an islandwith an abundance of gold. Modern researchers translated this concept, which was derived from the historical abundance of gold in Silla, but others regarded this belief as imagined and grounded on poor evidence. This article epistemologically approaches medieval Muslims’ awareness of Silla being the golden island by reviewing the legend of the ‘Golden Island in the Sea at the Eastern End of theWorld,’which is shared by the Islamic and influential pre-Islamic civilizations. We should consider that medieval Muslims’ knowledge about East Asia largely depended on the inherited concept of ancient foreign civilizations rather than direct experience and observation. Particularly, thoughts that affected medieval Muslims’ notions about East Asiawidely accepted the idea of ’TheGolden Island in the Sea at the Eastern End of the World.’ Consequently, ‘Silla, the Golden Island’ would be inspired not only by the actual abundance of gold there but possibly also by the concept of ‘the gold island in the sea at the extern end of the world’ in Muslims’ minds.
