Christian Ethics of Hospitality in the Refugee Era

2018년 한국 사회는 제주도로 들어온 500여 명의 예멘 출신 난민들을 받을 것인가 말 것인가를 놓고 국론이 분열된 바 있다. 21세기 지구촌 갈등의 문제는 지난 시절과 같은 이데올로기의 폭력이 아닌, 전 지구적으로 재편된 신자유주의 질서 속에서 자행되는 자본에 의한 폭력으로부터 야기되는 고통을 어떻게 치유할 수 있는가라는 물음에서부터 출발한다. 난민의 문제는 신자유주의가 야기한 모든 문제의 결정판이다. 난민은 신자유주의 질서로 편입하지 못하는 타자이고, 역사적으로 타자는 체제로부터 제거와 폭력의 대상이었다. 이러한 타자를 어떻게 규정하고 받아들일 수 있는가의 문제는 역사적으로 정의와 평화의 문제와 결부되어왔다. 본 연구는 우선 우리 사회 당면 문제로 부상한 난민이 누구인지에 대한 물음으로부터 시작한다. 특별히 2019년 사회 현안에 대한 개신교인 인식 조사에 드러난 난민에 대한 설문 조사를 바탕으로 한국 사회에 팽배한 난민에 대한 혐오의 현상학에 대해 다룰 것이다. 그러고 나서 이웃 사랑을 실천한 예수의 윤리학과 타자에 대한 무조건적인 환대를 언급한 데리다를 연결시키면서 최종적으로 21세기 난민 문제를 기독교 윤리 차원에서 어떻게 반응하고 대처해야 할 것인지에 대한 결론을 제시한다.

Since the influx of Yemeni fleeing war in 2018, Korean society has been divided over whether to accept refugees. The social problem of the 21st century is caused not by the violence of the Cold War but by the problem of capitalism in the neoliberal era. The refugee problem is the culmination of all the problems that neo-liberalism has caused. Refugees are the Other who cannot be incorporated into the neo-liberalist order, and historically, the system has sought to eliminate the Other, often with violence. The question of how to define and accept the Other has historically been linked to the question of justice and peace. This article begins with the question of who the refugees are who have emerged as problems facing our society. In particular, it will address the phenomenology of hatred toward refugees prevalent in Korean society based on a survey about refugees, which was revealed in the “Protestant Perception Survey on Social Issues 2019.” The article will then reflect on the life of Jesus, who practiced unconditional hospitality to the Other. After reviewing Jesus’s ethics of the other, we will examine the ethics of hospitality developed by Jacques Derrida who struggled with the refugee issue in France. After all these discussions, the article finally concludes by discussing how to respond and deal with the refugee issue in the 21st century in terms of Christian ethics.
