신자는 왜 고난받는가? 신약저자들은 예수 그리스도의 고난의 의미와 효능에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 신자들의 고난의 문제를 설명한다. 대리적 속죄로서, 이어지는 승리와 완성으로서 그리스도의 고난의 의미는 곧 신자들에게 적용될 수 있었다. 즉, 신자들은 공동체의 유익과 복음 증거를 위해서 고난받으며, 장차 완성될 하나님 나라에서 보상받을 것을 기대하면 고난받는다. 여기에 한 가지 덧붙이자면 고난을 통해 그리스도를 배우고 닮아가며 그 분과 연합할 수 있다. 신약 전체를 개관하기에 앞서 마카비서에 기록된 순교 이야기 두 편과 요세푸스가 기록한 마사다의 엘르아잘의 연설을 먼저 살피면서 제2성전기 유다이즘의 고난 이해의 일단을 규명하고 신약과의 연관성을 고찰한다.
Why does a Christian suffer? NT authors address the problem of suffering of the disciples and believers based on their understanding of Christ s suffering. Christ suffered vicariously for the expiation of sins, and then was raised from the dead and exalted as victor. These meanings can be applied to the suffering of believers. They suffer for the sake of community as well as for the witness of the Gospel. Their suffering is also a vouch for heavenly prizes. An additional significance of believers suffering is its educational effect. They learn to know and love Christ more as they suffer. Union with Christ is also experienced when a believer shares in Christ s suffering. Before we get the NT, we analyze two Second-temple Jewish writings. One is the books of the Maccabees on the seven martyrs and their mother. The other is Josephus s treatment of Eleazar s speech in Masada.
