Numerical simulation of tidal currents around the Dolsan~Hwatae channel of Gamak Bay

  • 32

In order to understand the currents around the Dolsan~Hwatae channel of Gamak Bay, tide and tidal current observation and 2D numerical model experiments of tidal currents and residual flows were carried out. Semi-diurnal tide is dominant and tidal factor is within the range of 0.25. Mean high water interval is delayed one hour and nine minutes and mean sea level is lower 1.4 meter as compared to Yeosu harbor. The currents flow northwest at flood and southeast at ebb respectively and have the reversing form in the Dolsan~Hwatae channel. The flood currents flow northwest along Dolsan~Hwatae channel from the offshore southern waters and some detached from the main stream flow into Dolsan Island~Song Island. Currents flow southeast along the channel from Hwatae island~Song Island and Dolsan Island~Song Isalnd in ebb. Currents attain a maximum speed of 170 cm/s among the channel and reach a speed of 190 cm/s at the southern limit of the channel. As tide induced residual flows, southeast weak flows along the channel, cyclonic and anticyclonic topographical eddies around the north and east coast of Hwatae Island, the east of Song Island and at the southern tip of the channel are found. Tide induced residual flows have a speed of 15 cm/s along the channel and reach the maximum speed of 30 cm/s.
