문화재와 문화재 교육의 탄생은 국민국가의 형성이라는 전 지구적 현상과 연결되며 국가주의를 이념적 배경으로 한다. 한국에서는 1950~1960년대 국가적 차원에서 문화재라는 용어를 사용하여 계승할 만한 가치가 있는 과거의 문화적 소산을 보호하는 제도를 만들었다. 이후 문화재는 국민과 민족을 상징하고 민족문화를 대표하게 되었으며 1970년대에는 한국사 교육의 한 방법으로서 국민 양성이라는 임무를 맡았다. 역사교육에서 문화재는 민족문화를 신비화하여 절대적인 자기 긍정의 민족 정체성을 함양하는 데 기여했다. 이후 문화재를 지역사 교육의 교재로 주목하기도 했지만, 민족의식 함양의 수단으로 보는 시각은 변함이 없었다. 다른 한편, 역사교육에서 문화재를 유물이나 유적과 같은 의미의 용어로 사용하면서, 사료와 문화재를 혼용하는 모습을 보이기도 하고, 한국사 교과서의 문화사를 문화재에 대한 교육과 문화재를 통한 교육으로 보면서 문화사 교육과 문화재 교육을 같은 의미로 사용하기도 했다. 문화재와 역사는 공통적으로 집단 정체성 함양의 기제로서 사회 통합의 중요한 수단으로 활용된다. 그러나 최근 문화재 내지는 문화유산과 관련된 사회적 담론과 학문적 연구는 역사와 문화재가 다르다는 점을 강조한다. 이 논문은 1950년대 이후 문화재가 어떻게 민족문화의 정수를 표상하게 되고, 역사교육을 통해 민족문화로 신성화되고 숭배되었는지, 1990년대 이후 역사교육에서 사고력을 강조하면서 문화재라는 용어가 어떻게 사료의 의미로 사용되었는지 살폈다. 그리고 최근 유산화와 유산학의 측면에서 역사와 문화재의 구분을 주장했다.
In Korea, in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the government established the system of preserving and protecting cultural property at the national level, during which cultural properties have symbolized the Korean ethnicity and Korean culture, and carried out the task of nation-building. Since the 2000s, in the studies of cultural property or cultural heritage in the field of history education, the terms, cultural property and artifacts have been used as if they had the same meaning. The term cultural property meant a source of historical inquiry and a means of developing historical thinking skills. The part of Korean history textbook dealing with the cultre of each era has been regarded as an account of cultural properties. Cultural property was not distinguished from history. However, recent social change and the rise of heritage studies highlight the difference between history and heritage. This paper argues that it is the time to reconstruct the relationship between historical education and cultural property education or cultural heritage education, distinguishing the concepts and methods of history and heritage.
