사료 학습 자료로 발라의 『위작 콘스탄티누스 기진장에 대한 연설』 읽기

Reading Valla’s De falso credita et ementita Constantini Donatione as a Source for History Education

본고는 르네상스의 대표적인 휴머니스트 로렌초 발라의 『위작 콘스탄티누스 기진장에 대한 연설』을 어떻게 세계사 교과의 사료 학습에 활용할 것인가에 관해 고찰한 것이다. 흔히 발라의 이 저작은 르네상스 비판정신의 정수로 회자되곤 한다. 이것은 다른 무엇보다 발라가 특유의 역사적·언어학적 접근 방식을 통해 교회 중심의 질서를 지탱해 오던 권위적 문서 『콘스탄티누스 기진장』이 위작임을 증명했고, 그 결과 중세 교회의 세속적 지배를 지탱하던 이론적 근거를 파괴했기 때문이다. 이와 관련하여 첫째 본고는, 발라가 언어의 시대착오적 용례에 주목하고 문서의 내용과 그것이 출현한 시대의 역사적 상황을 비교하면서 이른바 사료비판의 모범을 보였다는 점을 강조한다. 이는 곧 학생들에게 사료의 의미와 사료 비판의 실제 과정을 보여주는 역사적 실례가 될 수 있기 때문이다. 둘째, 사료로서의 『콘스탄티누스 기진장』의 허구성을 입증하면서 그 이면에서는 당대의 교회를 비판하고 있다는 점에서, 본고는 발라의 이 저작이 중세와 르네상스 모두를 이해하는 유용한 역사 자료가 될 수 있다고 주장한다. 달리 말해 콘스탄티누스의 신화가 만들어지고 해체되는 과정 속에서 중세에서 르네상스로 이어지는 서유럽 역사의 과정을 조망하는 계기를 얻을 수 있기 때문이다.

This study investigates the way of using De falso credita et ementita Constantini Donatione of Lorenzo Valla, the most representative of Renaissance humanists, as a useful historical source for World History class in school. Generally this work of Valla’s has been considered the quintessence of Renaissance critical spirit, because, through historical and philological approach to the text, Valla proved that Constitutum Constantini, the authoritative document which had sustained the medieval political order, was a forgery. In this regard, Valla’s attack upon it signifies that he destroyed the ideological grounds for Church’s domination of worldly matters. To prove this, Valla payed special attention to the anachronistic usage of language and compared what the text said with the historical situation in which it appeared. By keeping an eye on this, firstly this study stresses that Valla’s work can be seen as a typical of Quellenkritik, and that, accordingly, it can be a historical example for students to understand the meaning of historical sources and how to read them. Secondly this study contends that, as long as Valla’s work testified the fictionality of Constitutum Constantini and at the same time criticized the church of Valla’s own times, it can be a useful material through which we can understand the Renaissance and the Middle Ages as well. To put another way, by reading Valla’s text, students get an opportunity of viewing Western European history from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance as the complex process in which the myth of Constantine had been invented and dismantled.
