로버트 모리슨의 선교사역에 대한 평가와 중국선교의 과제

An Evaluation of Robert Morrison’s Ministry and Missionary Task for Chinese

1807년 영국 런던선교회의 파송을 받은 로버트 모리슨은 개신교 최초의 중국선교사로서 중국 광동(广东)지역에 첫 발을 내딛었다. 그는 선교사로 파송받기전에 영국에서부터 중국어 실력을 쌓았으며, 중국에서 선교를 시작한 후 신·구약성경을 중국어로 번역하였고, 많은 전도책자를 발행하여 중국인들에게 보급하였다. 그리고 그의 뒤를 이어 중국에 입국하여 복음을 위해 헌신하게 된 밀른이나 귀츨라프를 비롯한 많은 선교사들과 협력하여 중국인 인재들을 발굴, 양성하여 복음전도자로 세우는 사역을 하였다. 그러나 그 당시 중국은 자국민들에 대하여 외국인들과의 접촉을 금지하였으며, 심지어 중국인이 외국인에게 중국어를 가르치는 것조차 사형에 처할 만큼 심각한 위법행위로 간주하였던 폐쇄적인 국가였다. 따라서 모리슨은 자신의 신분을 보장받고, 동시에 경제적인 문제도 해결하기 위한 방편으로 중국과의 공식적인 무역 관계에 있었던 영국 동인도회사의 직원 신분을 가지고 중국 땅에 들어가게 되었고, 이 안정된 신분보장을 통해 중국인들과 자연스럽게 접촉하며 복음을전할 기회를 얻으려 하였다. 그러나 동인도회사의 통역 담당관 신분으로 중국과의 실제적인 무역에 참여함으로써 영국과 중국이 서로에 대하여 가지고 있었던불신과 갈등의 중심에 있게 되었다는 것 역시 부정하기 어려운 일이다. 따라서 본 논문은 로버트 모리슨의 선교사역에 대하여 간략히 고찰하는 것과함께 현재 중국교회가 19세기 초 개신교 중국 선교사들에 대하여 어떤 이해와 평가를 내리고 있는지에 대하여 살펴보려고 한다. 중국교회의 서양 기독교 선교사에 대한 인식을 이해할 때 비로소 그 간극을 좁혀 나갈 수 있고, 21세기 세계선교를 위한 협력의 길을 모색해 나갈 수 있을 것이다.

Robert Morrison, sent by the London Missionary Society in 1807, took his first step in the Guangdong region of China as the first Protestant Chinese missionary. He built his Chinese language skills from England before being sent as a missionary, translated the New and Old Testament into Chinese after starting missionary work in China, and published and distributed many evan- gelistic booklets to the Chinese. He worked with many missionaries who came to China following his footsteps to devote themselves to the Gospel, including Gϋtzlaff. He found and trained Chinese people of talent and built evangelists. But at that time, China was a closed country that banned its citizens from contacting foreigners and considered the Chinese teaching foreigners their language an offense serious enough for a death penalty. To guarantee his status and solve economic issues at the same time, Morrison entered Chinese terri- tory as an employee of the British East India Company, which had been in formal trade relations with China. Through guaranteed stable identity, he gained the opportunity to naturally communicate the Gospel with the Chinese. However, it is also true that he was in the center of Britain and China’s mutual distrust and conflict due to his participation in actual trade as the interpreter for the East India Company. Therefore, this paper, together with a brief review of the missionary work of Robert Morrison, will look at how the Chinese Church evaluate and un- derstand the Protestant Chinese missionaries in the early 19th century. When we understand the Chinese church s perception of Western Christian mission- aries, we can close the gap and find ways to cooperate for worldwide missions in the 21st century.
