20세기 신학이 삼위일체론에 지대한 관심을 갖고 수행한 연구는 “삼위일체적 신학의 르네상스”라고 불릴 만한 것이었다. 이 르네상스에는 많은 요인들이 있으나, 그중에서도 교부신학연구는 큰 기여를 하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 현대의 신학적논의에서 교부들의 작품들 자체가 심도 있게 연구되고 있는지에 대한 의구심과 비판이 이어지고 있다. 최근에 크리스토퍼 빌리도 이러한 비판에 동참하여, 카파도키아 교부들의 성령론을 그들의 작품들을 직접 살핌으로써 연구하였다. 빌리의 문제의식은 타당하며, 카이사레이아의 바실레이오스와 나지안조스의 그레고리오스에대한 그의 연구는 시사하는 바가 많다. 하지만 그가 니사의 그레고리오스에게 보이는 태도는 그가 동참하고 있는 비판을 해결하기보다, 그 대상이 되는 것으로 보인다. 본 논문은 그레고리오스의 성령론을 그의 작품들을 통하여 연구하여, 빌리의그레고리오스에 대한 비판의 타당성을 살필 것이다. 이로써 교부들의 작품들 자체에 대한 연구의 필요성을 해결하는 데 기여하고자 한다.
The twentieth century saw a reassessment of the doctrine of the Triune God, which has come to be known as the “renaissance of trinitarian theology.” Among several factors which occassioned this renaissance, studies on the pa- tristic era have been one of the most important sources for it. However, it has been discussed whether texts and works of the Church Fathers have been ac- curately studied by contemporary theologians in the renaissance. Recently, Christopher A. Beeley also joined this discussion. Asking if pneumatology of the Cappadocians has been accurately understood in the pneumatological re- action of theologians to the Christo-centric orientation, he studied works of the Cappadocians. His critical question is valid, and his study of pneumatology of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus is fascinating. However, his criticism of pneumatology of Gregory of Nyssa does not seem to solve the problem in contemporary scholarship on the patristic era. Beeley’s criticism of the Nyssen becomes rather the object of his criticism of the contemporary approach to patristic theology. This paper will investigate works of Gregory of Nyssa, assess Beeley’s criticism of Gregory, and contribute to provide a more in-depth study of the patristic era.
