다섯 개의 빵과 두 마리의 물고기로 5천 명의 사람들에게 먹을 것을 주는 예수의 기적은, 유일하게 4개의 복음서 모두에 기록된 사건이다. 이러한 이유로 초대교회들은 이 이야기가 예수의 핵심적 속성을 증거하고 있다고 믿었다. 본 연구는 요한복음 6:1-14을 중심으로 예수의 오병이어 사건이 드러내는 하나님의 메시아로서 만찬을 제공하는 예수의 신적 정체성을 논증한다. 본문의 내용과 유사한 내용을 담고 있는 구약의 사건들, 그리고 그리스-로마 및 고대 유대문헌들을 살펴보면서 본 연구는, 예수는 모세, 혹은 엘리사와 같은 선지자나, 어떤 역사적으로 위대한 예언적 인물의 원형이 아니라, 이보다 더 크신 분이심을 설명한다. 그리고, 예수는 선한 목자로서 양들을 먹이시되, 성별이나 지위 등과 상관없이 모든 이들을 공평하게 보호하시는 분이심을 논증한다. 예수님의 이런 풍성한 제공은 자신의 죽음까지도 내어 주신 결과이다. 끝으로, 요한복음 6:1-14에서 요한복음의 저자는 예수는 하나님의 메시아로, 이전부터 변함없이 행하신 하나님의 공급하심의 연속과 성취, 또한 영적인 공급과 육신적 필요를 모두 채우시는 공급자로 묘사하고 있음을 본 연구는 제안한다.
This paper aims to present a fresh reading of John 6:1-14 in terms of representing the purpose of Jesus’ ministry and the nature of his person as reinforcing the messianic status. When Jesus held the five loaves of bread and two fishes that a boy brought to him, they became abundant food for all. The sign of feeding five thousand, however, reveals deeper truths to readers about who Jesus is and what he does. Most of all, this sign witnesses the divinity of Jesus. I argue that John 6:1-14 is understood as unfolding the multi-dimensional aspects of who he is and what he had done; the divine provider and messianic host superior over any prophetic and imperial figures. For this, while presenting the selected passages from Old Testament corresponding with this miracle story of the Fourth Gospel this paper analyzes the literary structure of the passage. The examination of the literary structure unravels that John 6:1-14 conveys the distinctive idea of the identity of Jesus by distinctively describing the sign to feed the five thousand. Then, I investigate the various implications employed on the content of John 6:1-14 while presenting Hellenic and Second Temple Jewish literature as cultural backdrops. Based upon this analysis, I demonstrate that the sign in John 6:1-14 has three major motifs: firstly, Jesus is greater than Moses and Elisha. Secondly Jesus provides an abundant Messianic banquet, given his role as host. Finally, Jesus is the divine provider of the source of life for the hungry.
