Hebrews 9:23 has puzzled many scholars. Scholars have been disputing about whether the author of Hebrews refers to the necessity of purgation of the heavenly tabernacle or not. Recently, Jamieson contends that the author of Hebrews regards Christ’s sacrifice not only as inaugurating the new covenant but also cleansing the heavenly tabernacle from the defilement caused by human sins. This article aims to critique Jamieson’s contention in a sense that the book of Jubilees can provide an adequate avenue for better understanding the ways in which the author of Hebrew describes cults in Heb 9:18-22 and Yom Kippur in 9:23 respectively. In doing so, this article comes to the conclusion that the necessity of the purgation of the heavenly tabernacle in Heb 9:23 is untenable.
