아랍시사만평에서의 시각적 은유 연구

A Study on Visual Metaphor depicted in editorial cartoons of Arabic Media-Focusing on IS issues

본 연구는 복잡한 IS현안을 아랍시사만평을 통해 아랍의 시각으로 살펴보고자 한다. 2014년 6월 29일 시리아와 이라크 영토를 점령하여 IS가 국가 수립을 선언한 이후, 중동지역은 오늘날까지 총성이 끊이지 않고 있다. 시리아, 이라크와 IS간의 전쟁이라고 하기에는 미국, 러시아를 비롯한 서구국가들과 EU, 사우디아라비아, 이란, 터키, 이스라엘, 그리고 국제사회까지 직접적 혹은 간접적으로 IS현안에 개입되어 있다. 이토록 많은 국가들이 IS현안에 개입하는 이유가 무엇인가? 본 논문은 이 질문에 대한 해답을 찾고 복잡한 IS현안을 보다 쉽게 파악하고자 아랍시사만평을 분석하였다. 짧은 글과 그림으로 이루어진 시사만평은 쉽게 흥미를 유발하며 동시에 정보를 제공하는 수단으로 활용되고 있어 본 논문의 연구 목적을 실현하는 데에 적합한 자료이다. 본 연구는 2014년 6월 29일 IS국가수립 선언 이후부터 2020년 05월까지 아랍일간지 및 온라인사이트에 게재된 아랍시사만평 중에서 IS현안과 관련 있는 시사만평 74개를 수집하였다. 시사만평의 생명은 은유적인 풍자임을 감안하여 시사만평에 사용된 시각적 은유(visual metaphor)를 분석하여 아랍의 시각에서 바라본 IS의 모습과 관련 국가들의 목적을 파악하고자 했다.

This study investigates how the complex political situation unfolding in the Middle East such as the IS is perceived and depicted in editorial cartoons of Arabic media. Gunfires never ceased ever since the IS declared the establishment of the national government on June 29, 2014, by occupying Syrian and Iraqi territories. Many western nations including the US and Russia as well as the EU, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey and Israel and international organizations have made attempts to either directly or indirectly intervene in military conflicts in this region. What are these nations trying to gain from their intervention with the IS? The aim of this study is to comprehend such complicated multinational relations in the region by analyzing how the situation is illustrated in editorial cartoons of Arabic newspapers and media. Consisting of illustration and short text, editorial cartoons can attract attention easily and convey message. In addition, visual metaphors provide an excellent means to analyze and understand the underlying messages and intentions. For the study, a total of 74 cartoons were collected from daily newspapers and online websites in the Middle East published during the period from June 29, 2014, until May 2020. The visual metaphors in the cartoons were analyzed to study the viewpoints and aims of different parties seen in the eyes of the Middle East Media.
