한인 사진신부의 적응과 특성, 1920-1945

The Adaptation and Characteristics of Korean Picture Brides, 1920-1945: Beyond the Anti-Japanese Laws

본 연구의 목적은 1910년부터 1924년 동안 미국 서부지역으로 이주한 한인 사진신부들이 이룬 적응양상과 특성에 관해 규명하는 것이다. 일제 강점기에는 생계와 자유를 위해 수많은 이민자가 생겼고, 자발적인 의지로 디아스포라를 감행한 한인 사진신부들은 노동과 결혼으로 이주하는 디아스포라 여성들의 효시를 이루었다. 일제 강점기 한인 여성들이 최악의 차별적 환경을 극복하고 능동적으로 삶을 개척하고 나름의 특성을 형성하며 성공적으로 적응한 사례는 역사적으로 규명되어야 할 중요한 연구이다. 그러나 그 주제에 관한 종합적 분석이 아직 학계에서 시도되지 않았다. 한인 사진신부들은 새로운 기회를 얻고 자신들의 삶을 개척하려고 적극적인 의지를 가지고 미국으로 이주했다. 그러나 1905년 을사늑약 이후 미주 한인 이민자들은 일본의 신민으로 법적 지위가 변경되었고, 법적· 경제적· 사회적으로 차별에 직면하여 일제의 식민 지배 못지않은 수난을 당하며 적응해야만 했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한인 사진신부들은 일제강점기의 가부장제적인 토대를 극복하고 초국적 경험을 통해 자율적인 존재로 신세계의 차별적 악조건을 극복하면서 자신들의 삶을 개척하고 한인 사회의 발전에 기여했다. 미국 서부에서 능동적인 주체로서 한인 가족을 형성하며 미주 한인 사회의 초석을 이룬 미국 서부의 한인 사진신부들의 적응과 특성은 일제 강점기에서 중요한 역사성을 지니고 있다. 요컨대, 본 연구는 일제 강점기 한인 여성의 정체성에 새로운 시각을 모색하고, 미주 한인 여성의 독특한 적응과 특성을 규명해 한인 이민사 연구의 범위 확장을 시도했다는 점에 의의가 있다.

During the Japanese colonial period, Koreans, as well as overseas Koreans, had to survive in the face of discrimination and all kinds of hardships. The purpose of this study is to investigate the adaptation patterns and characteristics of Korean picture brides who moved to the West Coast of the United States. During the Japanese colonial period, the case of Korean women overcoming the worst discriminatory environment, actively pioneering life, shaping their own characteristics is an important study to be identified historically. However, a comprehensive analysis on the subject has not yet been attempted in academia. As a result of Gentlemen s Agreement, Korean picture brides had moved to the United States from 1910 to 1924. Although they immigrated to the United States with an active will, their legal status was aliens ineligible to citizenship like other Asian immigrants who bear the brunt of the racial hierarchy in the United States since 1790. Furthermore, Korean immigrants in the United States were considered as Japanese subject because Korea had been under Japanese rule since 1905. This study investigated how the Korean picture brides in the West Coast of the United States had applied different ways of adjustment depending on anti-Japanese laws and racism. Korean picture brides contributed greatly to the settlement and development of Korean community. They overcame the severe discriminatory conditions that apply to various Japanese exclusion laws, and pioneered their lives. In short, this study attempted to identify Korean women’s unique adaptation patterns and characteristics by exploring new perspectives and analyzing their lives during the Japanese colonial period.
