전간기 미국의 멕시코계 사회와 그 지평

Horizon of the Mexican Community in the Interwar Era: LULAC, Alternative Organizations, and Their Conflicting Perspectives for Mexican American Identity

이 연구는 2차 대전기에 이르러 과연 ‘LULAC이 대변하는 새롭고도 안정적인 집단적 멕시코계 미국인의 정체성’이 형성되었을까 라는 의문을 전간기 멕시코계 사회와 당시 성립된 멕시코계 미국인 조직들과 그 성격을 살펴보며 풀어보고자 한 것이다. 전간기, 남서부 멕시코계 공동체에서 기본적으로 멕시코계 미국인의 정체성과 문화, 지향성, 미국에서의 미래, 그리고 이민 등에 대한 상호 다른 시각을 가진 다양한 멕시코계 미국인 조직들, 대표적으로 LULAC, CUOM, 그리고 CSSP와 같은 조직들이 멕시코계 사회의 대중적 여론을 대변하며 등장하였다. 이는 멕시코계 사회가 복합적 지향성과 다양한 시각을 가진 사회로 진화하고 있었으며, 멕시코계 미국인들이 하나의 새롭고도 안정적인 멕시코계 미국인의 정체성을 형성해나가고 있기 보다는 정체성의 지평을 넓혀가고 있었다는 것을 제시한다. 따라서 2차 대전기에 이르러 미국주의와 통합주의의 구호속에서 하나의 정체성 하에 동질화된 멕시코계 미국인이 등장했다는 주장은 단지 신화일 뿐이었다. 또한 이는 멕시코 지향성과 미국 지향성을 넘어, 분리와 동화 및 통합을 넘어, 미국 사회의 인식과 제도의 변화 및 멕시코계의 미국인으로서 제 권리를 부르짖는 ‘60년대 치카노 운동 세대’의 등장에 토양을 제공하였다고 할 수 있다.

This study is to explore the conflicting perspectives for ethnicity among the Mexican American organizations such as LULAC and alternative organizations in the Mexican community during the interwar years. There has been the argument that Mexican Americans created a new, stable, and collective identity as represented by LULAC by the World War II era. However even just before the beginning of the war, the Mexican community was the one of conflicting orientations and perspectives for their identity, displaying the different pictures for the future of Mexican Americans in the U.S. And the Mexican community was moving from the one characterized by the polarized views to the one of the more complicated and diversified perspectives. Thus the thesis of the rise of a new, stable, and collective Mexican American identity by the war years was rather a myth. The Mexican community in the interwar period left a very important legacy for the Chicano generation of the 1960s, the generation that moved beyond the dichotomy, asking for their wide-ranged rights as both Mexican descent and American Citizens.
