생시르는 17세기 후반 가톨릭 종교개혁과 루이 14세의 귀족정책이 교차하는 지점에 위치한다. ‘일상생활에서의 신앙의 내면화에 입각한 경건하고 순종적인 여성의 주조’를 목표로 절대군주 루이 14세의 행정적, 경제적 지원 아래 설립된 생시르는, 경건하면서도 가부장제 질서에 순응적인 여성교육을 통해 국가권위에 복종하는 신민을 그 근본에서부터 양성하여 궁극적으로는 군주로 하여금 사회문화적 헤게모니를 장악하려는 정치적 의지의 표현이었다. 생시르의 이러한 교육목표를 가늠해볼 수 있는 바로미터 중 하나가 지리지(Cahiers de géographie)이다. 생시르의 여학생들은 지리지를 통해 당시 정치, 경제의 기초 및 지리를 이해하고 있었다. 또한 생시르의 지리지는 절대왕정기 중상주의의 논리로서 일종의 부국강병 이데올로기를 학생들에게 주입시키는 논거로 작용했다. 이러한 점에서 생시르는 절대왕정기 교육과 정치의 상호작용 및 함수관계를 보여주는 것이다.
