교양통계 교과목의 강의 개선방안에 관한 고찰

A Study on the Improvement of Lecture Method for General Statistics Course

대부분의 대학에서는 통계학 관련 교과목을 교양과목으로 개설하고 있다. 그간 일상생활에서 각종 생활통계를 접하다 보니 통계학의 필요성에 대한 인식이 높아졌기 때문일 것이다. 이 논문의 목적은 이러한 유리한 국면에서 교양통계 교과목의 실태를 점검하고 몇 가지 문제점을 찾아 개선방안을 모색하는 데 있다. 필자는 이 글에서 수강대상 학생에 따른 맞춤형 강의를 제안한다. 우선, 수강대상이 통계학을 전공하는 경우에는 전공과정의 진입을 위해 일종의 입문과정으로서 통계학의 기초 이론과 방법을 배우는 것이 좋을 것이다. 그러나 수강대상이 통계학 비전공자인 경우에는 복잡한 수식이나 통계이론보다는 통계학의 학문적 성격과 필요성, 각종 통계치의 정리·요약방법, 데이터 수집과 분석·해석방법에 주안점을 두는 게 낫다. 이 논문에서 필자는 수강대상에 따라 차별화된 강의계획 모형을 구성하여 제시했다.

Most of the Universities offer general statistics course as one of the liberal arts subjects. That is because we see many statistics in the newspaper and TV in these days, and thus we need to know statistics more than before. I examined the present state of the general statistics courses in many universities and constructed several kinds of lecture models for the statistics course. Furthermore, I found some problems in the present lecture models and suggested a new improved model for the general statistics course. I suggest a different lecture model to the students, considering whether they are major or non-major in statistics. If the students are major in statistics, they had better to learn the basic concepts and theories of statistics. However, if the students are not major in statistics, they want to know the usages of statistical methods, summary, collection, simple analysis using packages and interpretation of the data.
