Direct measurement methods, such as the Martin-type anthropometric method, are more convenient and accurate than indirect measurement methods because they enable the measurer to measure 2D data including length, circumference, breadth, and thickness in direct contact with the human body and from measuring points. Direct measurement methods, however, require more time and, depending on the level of a measurer s skill, may entail errors, and the data derived are irreproducible. The measurement of crotch height, defined as the height from the floor to the perineum point, is especially difficult for both subjects and measurers. In order to resolve the problems that occur with the measurement method and to save the measurement time, we contrived an effective way of using an automated anthropometric device and a real-time input program to measure not only crotch-height but also the dimensions using calipers. With 50 subjects, the measurement of 30 dimensions using a newly developed automatic anthropometric system proved to reduce effectively both time and subjects discomfort, compared to the traditional Martin-type anthropometric method.
