Growth and Demographic Characteristics of Seoul s Population

This paper attempts to show, to what extent, there has occurred the concentration of population in urban area, in the capital city of Seoul, and Seoul Metropolitan Area from the results of population censuses. In parallel with the concentration of population, the impact of net migration to the increase of population in urban area as well as in Seoul was also sought. More than 50 percent of the population increase were found to be contributed by the net migration. In the meantime, demographic characteristics of Seoul s population in comparison with the whole country are presented in this paper. Especially, as for the variable on children ever-born, there has been a narrowing trend of regional differences in fertility. It was also revealed that notable differences in other variables was not shown between the regions in Korea.
