An Analysis on the Efficiency and Productivity Changes of the Casino Industry in Korea

본 연구는 카지노업체 간의 경영효율성을 분석하기 위해 현재 운영되고 있는 카지노업을 비모수 측정방법인 자료포락분석(DEA)과 맘퀘스트 방법(Malmquist index)을 통하여 효율성과 생산성 변화를 동시에 분석하였다. 주요 분석결과에 의하면 카지노의 평균효율성은 2004년, 2005년, 2006년 각각 0.77, 0.64, 0.58로 계속 하락하고 있으며 하락의 원인은 호텔에 따라 규모 및 순수기술적 비효율성이 각각 상이하게 나타났다. 카지노업체의 생산성은 2004년~2005년 기간 중 호텔설악파크카지노(강원), 제주지역의 라마다프라자카지노 등이 하락하였으나 파라다이스워커힐카지노(서울), 파라다이스카지노(부산) 등은 상승한 것으로 나타났다. 2005~2006년 기간에는 이전과 달리 제주지역의 라마다프라자카지노와 파라다이스 그랜드카지노 등이 상승한 것으로 나타나 3년간에 걸쳐 개별 카지노에 따라 생산성이 급격하게 변화하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 실증 분석결과에 따른 효율성과 생산성의 감소 요인을 중심으로 유효 적절한 정책을 수립한다면 카지노기업의 경쟁력을 제고시킬 수 있을 것이다.

It has been widely conducted researches about the casino industry in Korea. However no study can be found associated with the analysis of the flow in the Korean casino research in the tourism industry. So this study aimed to analyze the flow of the casino research in Korea and to suggest the direction how to keep studying related to casino industry in Korea. We make an inter firm comparison of productivity changes in Casino industry by applying Malmquist index of productivity change and its decomposition to an Casino data set composed set composed of 12 firms over the period of 2004 to 2006. We experiment with two different specifications. The Korean Casino firms average technical efficiencies are 0.77 in 2004, 0.64 in 2005 and 0.58 in 2006, respectively. During 2004~2006 fiscal years, the total average factor productivity of the Korean Casino firms has increased from 0.88 to 1.08. In scale efficiency change has decreased from 1.17 to 0.88 and in pure technical efficiency has increased from 0.78 to 1.26. In both specifications we observe slight productivity increase in the last period (2004~2006) of analysis, suggesting increasing and intensifying competition in the industry over time.
