This paper attempts to show current status on the availability of regional statistics in Korea, problems the Korea National Statistical Office is facing and KNSO s initiatives taken for development of regional statistics. As a result of joint efforts between KNSO and some central governments as well as between KNSO and some local governments for last two and half years, some regional statistics have been developed and some are still under development. They are as follows: statistics on unemployment, GRDP, household income & expenditure, health status of residents, job vacancies, and tourism. KNSO continues to develop further regional statistics through the application of small area estimation technique and through strengthening the joint cooperation with other central and local governments.
