A Study on the Conceptual Formation Process of Life Faculty(命根)

본 논문은 초기 경전을 분석하여 壽에서 나타난 命根의 개념, 根에서 나타난 명근의 개념, 그리고 명근의 개념의 성립과정을 연구한 논문이다. 壽의 개념은 니까야에서 생존기간 동안 五蘊 · 處로서 수명이 존재한다. 수명은 체온 · 識의 화합으로 존재하고, 想受滅에 든 수행자가 識이 소멸하였을 경우에 신체를 유지하기 위해 수명 · 체온 · 오근과 함께 항상 존재하는 것으로 보고 있다. 아함경에서 태어날 때 오온 · 명근을 얻고 죽을 때 닫는 것으로 설명하고 있다. 수명은 체온을 의지하며, 마음은 수명을 의지한다. 수명은 체온 · 識의 화합으로 존재하며, 滅盡定에 든 수행자가 의식 가운데 想, 受가 소멸하였을 경우에 신체를 유지하기 위해 수명 · 체온 · 근이 항상 존재하는 것으로 설명되었다. 여기에서 명근은 생명 존속 기간 동안 생기고 닫히는 것으로 설명 된다. 초기 경전에서 구체적으로 정의되지 않은 명근의 용례와 남전불교와 북전불교의 설명의 차이는 아비달마 시대에 각 부파 간 서로 다른 견해를 생기게 하는 문제점을 발생시켰을 것이다. 명근의 개념의 성립과정에서 이것은 생명의 존재기간 동안 의존적으로 활동하며 소멸하는 개념으로 정의 되어 졌고, 이 개념은 고대 인도의 사상과 뚜렷한 차이점을 보이고 있음으로 확인 된다.

Largely based on Nikāyas and Āgamas, this study explores the conceptual formation process regarding jīvitêndriya, which is the driving force of physical and mental action, by comparing the concept of life faculty reflected in the concepts of “lifespan” (Skt. jīvana) and “faculty” (Skt. indriya), and also through direct explanation. Ever since the nirvana of the Buddha, the concept of life faculty has been continually influenced and altered through conflicts and exchanges with other diverse thoughts. Among these diverse thoughts, the concepts of ātman and soul have some elements that cause confusion with the metaphysical concept of life faculty. About the concept of life faculty reflected in the notion of lifespan, I found that Pāli-Nikāya doesn’t provide any explanation, but Āgamas says that the life faculty is endowed at birth and ceases at death. The various usages of life faculty, not concretely defined in Early Buddhist scriptures, and the explanatory differences between the Southern and Northern Traditions, are thought to have created different viewpoints between diverse sects in the abhidharma era. I have confirmed that Buddhist explanations on life faculty, which acts dependently during one’s lifetime and then ceases, reveal a clear discrepancy from those of ancient Indian thought.
