아시아 공동통화의 기본균형환율 추정과 환율 정책

Estimating Fundamental Equilibrium Exchange Rates of Asia Currency Unit - A Case of Eight East Asian Currencies

아시아 공동통화환율(ACU)을 정의하고, 1980∼2004년까지 한국, 중국, 일본 등 아시아 8개국의 자료를 활용하여 아시아 공동통화의 명목환율 및 실질실효환율을 추정한 후, 아시아지역의 수출과 수입함수에 기초하여 아시아 공동통화의 기본균형환율을 추정하여 아시아 지역의 외환시장 불균형과 환율정책을 평가하였다. 추정결과, 아시아지역의 수출 및 수입함수는 경제이론에 부합하고 적합도도 높았다. 또한 아시아 공동통화로 평가한 실제 환율과 균형환율과의 격차는 크지 않은 것으로 나타났으나, 개별국가의 환율과 아시아 공동통화의 균형환율과 크게 차이를 보이는 것으로 제시되었다. 따라서 아시아 지역의 공동통화의 필요성이 크게 나타났고, 1997년 외환위기는 아시아 지역의 전반적인 외환시장 불균형보다는 특정 국가의 불균형 및 특정통화의 불안정에 기인한 것으로 평가된다.

We define and estimate Asian Currency Unit, applying exchange rate and trade weights of 8 countries such as Korea, Japan, China, etc from 1980 to 2004. And we estimate fundamental equilibrium exchange rates of Asia based upon Asia s import and export function. We find that estimated equations of export and import were quite compatible with economic theory and that the gap between actual exchange rate and equilibrium exchange rate of Asian Currency Unit are not so large. However, exchange rate of individual countries are quite different from the equilibrium ACU so as to cause the large shift of exchange rate.
