어머니의 우울이 초등학교 3학년 아동의 집행기능곤란에 미치는 영향

The Effects of Maternal Depression on Executive Function Difficulties of 3rd-grade Children: The Mediation of the Home Environment

본 연구는 학령전기 어머니의 우울이 가정환경을 매개로 초등학교 3학년 아동의 집행기능곤란에 미치는 영향을 종단적으로 탐색하는 데 연구의 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 ｢한국아동패널연구｣ 자료 중 5(2012년), 6(2013년), 7(2014), 8차(2015) 및 10차년도(2017년)에 수집된 1,381가족의 어머니와 아동의 자료를 사용하여 구조방정식모형 분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학령전기 어머니의 우울은 초등학교 3학년 아동의 집행기능곤란과 정적인 상관관계를 보였다. 학령전기 어머니의 우울은 초등학교 1학년 시기 가정환경과는 부적인 상관관계를 나타냈다. 가정환경은 집행기능곤란과 정적인 상관관계를 가지는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 둘째, 구조방정식모형 분석 결과, 학령전기 어머니의 우울 수준이 높을수록 초등학생 자녀의 발달에 적합한 가정환경을 구성하는 것으로 나타났다. 가정환경은 다시 아동의 집행기능곤란에 유의한 영향을 주어, 가정환경의 질적 수준이 높을수록 아동이 집행기능곤란을 덜 보이는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 가정환경의 부분매개효과와 더불어 학령전기 시기 어머니의 우울이 초등학교 3학년 시기 아동의 집행기능곤란에 미치는 직접적인 영향력 역시 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 통해, 어머니 우울에 대한 조기 평가와 개입의 중요성을 시사하였고, 아동의 집행기능에 영향을 미치는 양육과정으로서의 가정환경의 역할을 조명하였다.

This study is aimed at investigating the longitudinal effects of maternal depression during the preschool years on 3rd graders’ executive function difficulties through the mediation of home environment. The data from the study sample of 1,381 mothers and their children who had participated in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th waves of the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC) was used to conduct Structural Equation Modeling. The findings were as follows. First, maternal depression during the preschool years had a positive correlation with executive function difficulties when children were 3rd grade. There was a negative relation between maternal depression and home environment at 1st grade. Home environment was also associated with children’s executive function difficulties. Second, according to the SEM analysis, the greater maternal depression predicted better quality of home environment later. The home environment, in turn, had significant effect on children’s executive function difficulties; such that children who were living in richer home environment showed less executive function difficulties. Home environment partially mediated the association between maternal depression and children’s executive function difficulties. The findings demonstrated the importance of early screening and intervention for maternal depression and shed lights on the role of home environment as a parenting process influencing children’s executive functions.
