The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of caring climate, basic psychological needs, and athletic stress. Participants of this study were 242 (male=250, female=92) Taekwondo student-athletes (middle and high school). Data were collected by self-report survey and analyzed by using descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple-regression analysis. The results were revealed as follows. First, caring climate had a positive effect on all sub-scales of basic psychological needs: autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Second, caring climate had a negative effect on coach and peer stress which are sub-scale of athletic stress. Third, relatedness, sub-scale of basic psychological needs, had a negative effect on coach and peer stress. In conclusion, this study identified the relationship between caring climate providing by coaches, basic psychological needs, and stress of athletes. Especially, it had been found that perceived caring is key variable to satisfy relatedness and coping with stress.
