Development and Validation of the Manipulativeness Scale

기만/조종은 타인에게 영향력을 행사하는 것과 관련된 성격 특질로서 이러한 특질을 가진 사람은 그들이 원하는 것을 얻기 위해 남을 속이고 이용하는 경향이 높다. Gozna 등(2001)의 연구에서 기만/조종은 사회적 기민성(social adroitness)과 마키아벨리아니즘(machiavellianism)의 성격 특질 문항의 결합으로 측정하는 것이 제안되었다. 본 척도는 이 제안을 참고하여 기만/조종 척도(Manipulativeness Scale)를 번안하여 신뢰도 분석과 요인분석을 통해 타당성을 검증하였다. 기만/조종척도는 정신병질을 측정하는 Levenson’s Self-Report Psychopathy 척도와는 높은 정적 상관을 보이고 HEXACO 정직/겸손성 척도와는 부적 상관을 나타내었다. 본 연구에서는 이 척도가 전반적으로 양호한 신뢰도와 타당도를 지니고 있으므로 타인을 기만하고 조종하는 성향을 예측하는 유용한 도구라는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Manipulativeness is a characteristic related to exercising one’s influence on other people, meaning that a person with this characteristic has atendency ofdeceiving and exploiting others in order to obtainthings he or she may want. Gonza, et al., proposed that Manipulativeness could be measured usinga combination of characteristics of indices such associal adroitness and Machiavellianism. With Gonza’s proposition as reference, we verified the validity of the Manipulativeness Scale through reliability analyses and factor analyses. The Manipulativeness Scale showed a high positive correlation with Levenson’s Self-Report Psychopathy (which measures psychopathy) and a negative correlation with the HEXACO Honesty/Humility Scale. The results of this research provided satisfactory levels of reliability and validity, ascertaining that the Manipulativeness Scale may be a useful tool in predicting an individual’s characteristics of deceit and exploitation towards other people.
