김대중과 빌리 브란트의 ‘다양성 속의 통일’ 사상과 남한과 서독의 정치·사회·문화적 토양

The Ideas of Unity in diversity of Kim Dae-jung and Willy Brandt and the social·cultural soils of South Korea and West Germany

김대중과 빌리 브란트의 시대와 공간에 대한 이해와 함께 그들의 사상과 활동을 비교와 관계의 차원에서 연구하였다. 그들의 사상과 활동을 공통적으로 ‘다양성 속의 통일’로 이해할 수 있었다. 남한의 경우 다양성이 부족하고 이분법적인 반공주의가 내재화되었다. 그래서 김대중의 ‘다양성 속의 통일’ 사상과 정책으로 햇볕정책은 큰 어려움을 겪었다. 서독의 경우 나치시대에 대한 반성에서 다양성이 중시되어 반공주의에 대해 덜 경직되었다. 빌리 브란트의 ‘다양성 속의 통일’ 사상과 정책으로서 동방정책은 비교적 호응을 얻었다. 김대중은 이러한 남한의 풍토에서 공산주의자라는 음해와 오해를 받았다. 빌리 브란트는 김대중에 비해 비교되지 않을 정도의 급진적인 사상과 정치 노선을 추구하기도 하고, 그의 반나치 저항 투쟁 시기에는 소련 공산당과 협력한 경력도 가졌다. 그러나 브란트는 서독에서 김대중이 겪은 바와 같은 공산주의자라는 음해로 시달리지는 않았다. 필자는 빌리 브란트의 동방정책과 비교하면서 김대중과 햇볕정책을 비판할 것이 아니라 다양성이 부족한 대한민국의 사회·문화적 토양을 개선할 생각을 해야 한다고 본다.

The thoughts and activities of Kim Dae-jung and Willy Brandt in light of different political, social and cultural backgrounds of their countries were studied in terms of comparison and relationship. To this research, their thoughts and activities were commonly focussed on the principle of the “unity in diversity”. The South Korea lacked and lacks the diversity and has been internalizing dichotomous anti-communism. So, the Sunshine Policy pursed by Kim Dae-jung based on the idea and policy of “unity in diversity” suffered greatly in this political, social and cultural soil. In this aspect, we must be able to evaluate and understand the value of the Sunshine Policy of Kim Dae-jung. In contrast to this, in West Germany, diversity was valued highly in critical reflection on the Nazi era. This led to make the people of this country less rigid towards anti-communism. The idea and policy of Willy Brandt, especially Ostpolitik based on the principle of “unity in diversity”, was relatively in accordance with West German political, social and cultural soil. In the South Korean climate, Kim Dae-jung was plagued and misunderstood as a communist. Willy Brandt pursued an incomparable radical ideology and political line towards communism compared to Kim Dae-jung. During his anti-Nazi resistance struggle, Willy Brandt had a career in cooperation with the Soviet Communist Party. But Brandt wasn t plagued by the abuse of Communist in West Germany as Kim Dae-jung suffered in South Korea. Therefore, we should endeavor to improve the political, social and cultural soil of Korea towards unity in diversity which lacks the vale sense of the diversity.
