주성분분석을 이용한 신라 중앙과 지방 토기 비교

Comparison of pottery in central and local Silla using the principal component analysis

본고는 주성분분석을 통해 경주, 부산, 강릉 세지역의 이단투창고배를 분석하였고, 이 과정에서 육안으로는 쉽게 확인할 수 없는 지역별 특징을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 4세기 말엽에서 5세기 중엽까지는 지역별로 군집 양상이 뚜렷하게 나타나고, 이후 5세기 말엽이 되면 세 지역의 토기는 거의 구분이 불가능할 정도로 유사도가 높아진다는 것을 확인하였다. 지역 간 유사도가 높아지는 것은 거의 동일한 수준의 ‘토기 생산체계와 기술’을 가지게 되었다는 것을 의미하고, 본격적으로 경주지역을 중심으로 신라 중앙과 지방의 토기가 규격, 양식적으로 통일되어 가는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 또한 주성분분석을 통해 각 시기마다 기본적으로 4개의 군집을 설정하였고, 이를 활용하여 기본적인 대분류가 가능하며, 일부 군집에 대해는 지역산, 또는 지역양식을 설정하는 것도 가능하다는 것을 확인하였다. 하지만 유물의 형태를 기준으로 한 분류와 이를 통한 연구가 무용하다는 것은 아니며, 유물의 특성과 시기, 출토지역 등에 따라 주관에 의한 분류와 그를 활용한 연구방법이 더 유용하게 사용될 수 있음은 너무나 자명한 일이다. 결국 주성분분석은 기존의 연구방법으로는 파악할 수 없었던 분석 대상의 세부적 특징과군집을 설정할 수 있다는 것이 가장 큰 장점이며, 통계학을 활용함으로서 그동안 고고학에서 소홀하게 보고 넘겼던 ‘객관의 확보’에 조금은 다가갈 수 있다는 점에 의의가 있다.

This study analyzed mounted cups of Gyeong-ju, Bu-san, Gang-neung areas through the principal component analysis of statistics. In this process, the characteristics of areas that cannot be easily identified by the naked eye were identified. And by the end of the fifth century, pottery from the three areas became almost indistinguishable. Four clusters were set up for each time period, and basic sections were available. In addition, four clusters were set up for each period, which enabled basic grouping. It has been confirmed that it is also possible to set up local production or style for some clusters. However, classification based on the form of an artifact and research through it are not useless. And it is too obvious that the subjective grouping and methods may be more useful depending on its characteristics, period, and areas. Therefore, I would like to conclude this study carefully emphasizing that it is meaningful to be able to carry out grouping and research that has maintained objectivity through the principal component analysis and to actively utilize other studies.
