임진왜란 시기 안위의 수군활동과 역사적 평가

Ann Wi s Naval Activities and His Historical Evaluation during the Imjin War

전북 김제 출신으로 임진왜란 시기 수군 장수로 큰 활약을 한 안위장군은 그동안 세간에 잘 알려지지 않았다. 그것은 조선 수군이 가장 중요한 활약을 한 임진년(1592년)의 해전에 안위가 참전하지 않았기 때문이었다. 그러나 안위도 다른 장수에 못지않은 전공을 이룬 인물로 평가된다. 난중일기에 이순신과 안위가 접축한 내용이 총 55회나 보일 정도로 이순신과 밀접한 관계를 맺었다. 안위는 1594년 거제현령 직을 수행하면서 당항포해전부터 전부장이라는 전투편제로 참가하여 활약하였다. 이후 장문포해전과 원균이 지휘한 칠천량해전에도 참가하였다. 이어서 백의종군에서 복직한 이순신이 지휘한 명량해전에서는 큰 공을 세웠으며, 이후 전라우수사로 진급한 후 노량해전에 이르기까지 중요한 전투에 모두 참가한 역전의 용장이다. 안위는 당대 조정으로부터 명량해전의 수공자로 인정되었으며, 전후 논공행상 시 선무원종일등공신 중에서도 수위에 기록될 만큼 높게 평가된 인물이다. 조선후기에 들어서 청렴하지 못한 근무태도 때문에 탄핵을 받기도 했지만, 분명 역전의 용장으로 인식되었다. 따라서 안위의 활약상을 오늘날 드러내고 그의 업적을 선양할 필요가 있다. 안위를 선양하는 가장 기초적인 작업은 바로 그의 활동상을 드러내어 논문화한 후 일대기를 편찬하는 것이다. 그런 후 기존 인물들의 선양방법과 유사한 형태로 보다 진일보한 단계를 밟아나가는 것이 선양의 바람직한 방법일 것이다.

Admiral Ann Wi was born in Gimje, Jeonbuk and he played a great part as a naval commander during the Imjin War. Nevertheless, he has not been well known to the public. It’s because he did not participate in the naval battles in 1592 when the Joseon naval forces played the most important role. However, he was as great as other commanders and distinguished himself in war. Admiral Yi’s War Diary, Nanjung Ilgi shows that Ann Wi and Yi Sun-shin contacted each other 55 times, which indicates they had a close relationship. He was the local official, Geoje Hyeonryeong in 1594 and participated in Danghangpo Battle as Jeonbujang(前部將) in a military unit organization and played an active part in the battle. Later, he participated in Jangmunpo Battle and the Battle of Chilchonryang, which was led by Won Gyun. He then made a great contribution to the Battle of Myeongryang led by Yi Sun-sin, who was reinstated in his former post after fighting as an enlisted soldier. After being promoted to the commander of the Right Jeolla Naval District, he participated in all of the important battles and won come-from-behind victories including the Battle of Noryang. His exploit of Myeongryang Battle was recognized by the royal court and he was awarded rewards according to his merits. He was highly regarded enough to be ranked in the top of the Seonmu Wonjong Ildeung Gongsin(宣武原從一等功臣). Although he was impeached for his corrupt attitude in work in the late Joseon period, he was absolutely honoured as a brave veteran. Therefore, it is necessary to reveal his performance and exalt his achievements. The most basic way of enhancement is to uncover his activities in research papers and compile his biography. After that, it would be desirable to take a more advanced step and enhance his achievements in a similar manner to the way the existing figures were enhanced.
