코로나19 환경의 온라인 관광영어수업에 관한 연구

A study of online-based Tourism English courses during COVID-19

  • 389

The present study is aimed at investigating online-based Tourism English courses during COVID-19 and suggests teaching and learning activities to facilitate English communicative competence. For the study, 168 students enrolled in Tourism English courses were asked to participate in various online teaching and learning activities for a 15-week semester and complete a survey about their course. The survey questions were formed to confirm the preference for online lecturing and teaching and learning activities. In the findings, students preferred to have EverLec (online prerecorded instruction) to Zoom (online face-to-face instruction) and showed a distinctive preference for small group activities in accordance with the types of online instructions and learner variables. Students also reported their higher satisfaction with teacher-student interaction rather than student-student interaction online. In addition, students’ suggestions to facilitate English competence in tourism courses are as follows: 1) having a blended method with both online synchronous instruction and online prerecorded instruction simultaneously; 2) making assignments for small group discussion; 3) having low stakes assignments; and 4) having more LMS-based teacher-student interaction. Lastly, regarding COVID-19 and the traditional online learning situation, further pedagogical implications are discussed in this study.
