A conscientious alternative service is a substitute for conscription or military service, in which conscientious objectors work typically in social welfare facilities instead of army for a certain period. Till now our country doesn t provide a conscientious alternative service. Korean government has been under the pressure of adopting an alternative civilian service. The focus of this research is both to find the appropriate period of alternative service and to estimate the proportion of selecting the alternative service. We tried to estimate the rational service period using the conditional logit model. We used three periods (21, 24, and 27 months) of military service and seven periods (21, 24, 27, 32, 37, 42, and 47 months) of alternative service to analyze the model. As a result of our model estimation, the 47 or more months of alternative service period are derived to be adequate.
