군복무 경험이 취업과 임금에 미치는 영향

The Effects of Military Service Experience on Employment and Wage

본 연구는 우리나라에서 군복무 경험이 임금과 취업에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 청년패널 1차년도 조사(YP2007)를 이용하여 실증적으로 분석하였다. 취업분석을 위해서는 로짓모형을 사용하였으며, 임금분석을 위해서는 선택편의를 고려한 Heckman의 표본선택모형을 사용하였다. 분석결과, 군복무 경험은 취업이나 임금 같은 노동시장 성과에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 2년여의 군생활이 개인들의 취업능력이나 생산성 향상에 보탬이 되지 않는다는 것을 의미하며, 따라서 국가방위라는 고유 임무 이외에도 군생활 이후의 노동시장 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있도록 군복무 과정에서의 교육훈련 프로그램들이 마련되고 개선될 필요가 있다는 것을 암시한다.

This study used the first round survey of Youth Panel (YP2007) to examine the effect of military service experience on employment and earnings of young workers in Korea. We employed logit model for employment analysis and Heckman’s sample selection model for earnings regression. The empirical results do not suggest any evidence that military service experience affects labor market performance of young male workers. This result implies that more than two years of military service does not improve the employability or the productivity of male workers in the labor market. Therefore, some policy measures might be needed to better design military programs, particularly training and education programs, so that two years stay in the military may lead to positive labor market outcomes to young male workers.
