‘ていうか’의 話用的 分析

A Pragmatic Analysis of ‘Teiuka’ - From the Perspective of the Politeness

本稿は｢ていうか｣を研究対象として、語用論的側面でのポライトネス理 論を適用し、その特徴を考察することが目的である。実際の会話で｢ていうか｣は多様な意味合いで使われる表現として、｢緩和と反対·否定｣、｢非難と配慮｣、｢躊躇感と本音｣などの発話態度と意味が混在、あるいは共存する特徴を持っている。このような｢ていうか｣の両面性を、本稿では語用論的ポライトネス、その中でもBrown & Levinson(1987)のポライトネス理論の核心となる｢フェイス｣、すなわち｢消極的フェイス·積極的フェイス｣からその関連性を発見できた。したがって、本稿はこのような点に着目し、文頭と文末の｢ていうか｣を中心にポライトネス理論の具体的ストラテジーを適用して、より体系的考察を試みた。まず、｢ていうか｣を対象とした発話者の種類と数によって、(1)先行話者の発話に対する後行話者の｢ていうか｣の適用発話、(2)自分の先行発話に対する同一話者の｢ていうか｣の適用発話、(3)複数話者の先行発話に対する後行話者の｢ていうか｣の適用発話、(4)独白的｢ていうか｣の適用発話のような四つの類型に分類できた。そして(1)の先行話者の発話に対する後行話者の｢ていうか｣の適用発話は、相対的に文頭に出現する割合が高い特徴が見ることができた。また、文頭と文末の｢ていいか｣はどちらも否定と緩和の意味が混在または共存していることが確認できた。

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of ‘teiuka’ by applying specific strategies that appear in the politeness theory and ultimately to identify the nature of ‘teiuka’. ‘Teiuka’ is actually an expression used in various forms and meanings in utterances. It has the features of coexisting attitudes and meanings such as ‘mitigation and opposition/denial’, ‘criticism and consideration’ and ‘hesitation and sincerity’. In addition, ‘teiuka’ is used to avoid the basic negative meanings on the surface, so it can be assumed as a kind of indirect expression. Lastly, it was revealed that the characteristics of ‘teiuka’ are related to the politeness theory of pragmatic level, especially ‘face,’ which is one of the core concepts in Brown & Levinson’s (1987) theory.
