日本文学の中の黒猫をめぐって

On the Black Cat in Japanese Literature

日本での猫の人気は多くの映画やドラマなどに猫が頻繁に登場するという結果を生み出した。メディアに出てくる猫は、その毛色によって異なる役割を持っている。特に黒猫は神秘な力を持ち、能動的に働き、主人を手伝ってくれる存在として登場する。この論考では、こうした研究結果を踏まえ、猫が語り手である『吾輩は猫である』と、愛猫家の村上春樹の『海辺のカフカ』を資料とし、黒猫の役割を分析した。その結果、『吾輩は猫である』の黒猫は、体格が大きく、目が琥珀色で眼光が鋭い、乱暴な猫という点で江戸時代の猫股を連想させ、悪役としての｢黒｣の役割を増大させている。 一方、『海辺のカフカ』に出てくる黒猫は、神秘な力を持ち、人間を助けてくれる存在である。上下巻にそれぞれ登場する黒猫は、｢雄猫で、身体が大きく、年老いている｣という共通点を持つ。｢猫が年を取ると、猫股になる｣猫股伝説を思わせる点は共通しているが、村上春樹の黒猫は、人間に害を与える存在としてではなく、人間と協力するやさしい猫へと変貌している。村上春樹の猫への思いの現れだと言えよう。

In Japan, cats are popular animals, and there are a number of films and TV dramas featuring cats. Cats, as featured in these media, play distinct roles depending on the colour of their fur. In particular, black cats are described in such a way that they have a mysterious power and actively serve their master. In this article, we build on these research results and analyse the role of black cats in I am a Cat, where the cat is a narrator and Kafka on the Shore, written by Haruki Murakami, who is fond of cats. The analysis indicates that the black cat in I am a Cat is big and rowdy with sharp, amber eyes, which leads the readers to think of cat apparitions in Edo period. These characteristics increase the role of “black” as a colour associated with evil. On the other hand, the black cats in Kafka on the Shore have a mysterious power and help humans. The cats in the two volumes are both “male, big, and old.” This reminds the readers of the legend that “when a cat gets old, it will become a cat apparition.” Still, the black cats in the work by Haruki Murakami do not harm humans but cooperate with them. This seems to reflect Haruki Murakami’s warm emotion to cats.
