The Effect of the Individual Differences in Working Memory on Sentence Processing

본 연구의 목적은 개개인의 작업기억 및 인지능력의 처리 특성이 문장의 이해에 어떻게 영향을 주는지를 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 숫자폭 과제, 어휘판단 과제, 형태비교 과제, 작업폭 과제, N-back 과제, 시각폭 과제, 읽기폭 과제를 이용하여 일반적 인지기능과 작업기억의 하위 구성 요소들의 처리 능력을 측정하였다. 또한 본 연구에서는 개인의 문장이해 능력 측정을 위해서는 문법적 구조의 복잡성과 의미적 중의성, 정보의 양에 따른 문장이해능력의 차이를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 문법적으로 단순한 문장의 이해는 인지능력의 측정치들과 관련이 없었으나 문법적으로 복잡한 문장의 경우에는 작업폭 과제, 시각폭 과제, 읽기폭 과제와 같은 복합적 인지능력 측정치들과 상관이 있었다. 또한 중의적인 문장과 정보의 양이 많은 문장의 경우에도 작업폭 과제와 상관을 보였다. 이와 같은 결과는 개개인의 문장 이해능력의 개인차가 주로 작업폭 과제로 측정되는 중앙집행기의 처리능력과 관계있다는 점을 시사한다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the individual difference of the subcomponents of the working memory on sentence processing. Lexical decision task, pattern recognition task, operational span task, N-back task, symmetric span task, reading span task were used to test the individual differences of the working memory processing mechanism. Sentences with different syntactic complexity and ambiguity were tested and the amount of the information contained in a sentence were also varied. As results, syntactically simpler sentences showed no correlation with any of the working memory measures while syntactically more complex sentences showed correlation with complex span tasks such as symmetric span, operational span and reading span tasks. Operational span task also showed correlations with syntactic ambiguity and the amount of the information. The results of this experiment suggest that the individual differences of the understanding of the sentences were mainly related with the processing capacity of central executive.
