자기구성 개념과 미디어콘텐츠 이용이 문화적응 형태에 미치는 영향

The Relation of Self-construal, Media Contents Use, and Acculturation -A Case Study of Korean in the North-West U.S.

본 연구는 재미 한국인이 현지 문화에 적응하는데 자기구성 개념과 미디어콘텐츠 이용이 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 구조방정식 모형을 이용한 분석 결과 상호의존적 자기구성은 문화적응 형태 중 분리에 직접적 영향을 주고, 독립적 자기구성은 통합에 직접적 영향을 주는 것이 확인되었다. 또한, 자기구성은 미디어콘텐츠 이용에 영향을 미치고 이것이 다시 문화적응에 영향을 미침으로써 발생하는 간접효과를 확인할 수 있었다. 독립적 자기구성 성향이 강한 사람은 현지 미디어콘텐츠를 많이 이용하였고, 이러한 사람에게서는 미국문화에 동화되거나 통합되는 경향이 나타난 것이다. 이에 비해 한국 미디어콘텐츠를 많이 이용하는 사람들에게서는 동화와 통합의 경향이 낮아지고 분리되는 경향이 높게 나타났다. 이는 현지 미디어콘텐츠 이용이 문화적응에 도움을 주지만, 모국 미디어콘텐츠 이용은 그러하지 못한다는 것을 보여준다. 본 연구는 재미 한국인 사례 연구를 통해 타문화권에서의 문화적응에 영향을 미치는 요소가 무엇인지 찾아보았다는데 의의가 있다.

This study explores how the self-construal and media contents use impact on the acculturation among koreans who live in the north-west U.S.. Results using structural equation model show that interdependent self-construal has a direct impact on the separation of cultural adaptation and independent self-construal has a direct effect on integration but not on assimilation. On the other hand, self-construal has indirect effect on the acculturation through media contents use. Respondents who have strong independent self-construal mainly used American media contents positively related to assimilation and integration. On the contrary, there is a negative tendency of separation among who used Korean media contents mainly. They had low degree of assimilation and integration. It tells that the use of the local media contents is helpful for the acculturation who live abroad. For them, the use of media contents of motherland is to be avoided for better acculturation.
