반계 유형원의 학문과 사상의 연원 탐색

반계(磻溪) 유형원(柳馨遠)은 제도개혁에 관한 방대한 저작, 『반계수록(磻溪隨錄)』을 저술함으로써 실제성 추구를 하나의 ‘학문’으로 체계화한 실학의 선구자이다. 그는 어려서 역모사로 아버지를 잃었고, 특별한 학연이나 사승관계를 갖지 못하였으며, 사회적으로도 출사한 경험이 없었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 국가 경영 전체를 기획하는 『반계수록』이라는 대작을 쓸 수 있었던 배경은 무엇이었을까? 그것은 외숙 이원진과 고숙 김세렴에 의해 그에게 수혈되었던 북인의 학풍과 실무적 안목이었다. 북인계 근기남인 관료였던 두 사람은 철저히 실무능력이 완비된 사람들이었으며, 실용적 학문에 문무가 겸비된 인물들이었다. 그들은 그 전 세대인 한백겸ㆍ이수광 등이 북인과 남인의 학문을 고루 취하며 발전시킨 박학의 방법과 고법 연구 그리고 북인의 학풍인 자연주의적 사고와 법치행정중시 사상, 국가중심주의 등을 전승했으며, 이것은 다음 세대인 유형원에게 수렴되었다. 유형원의 학문과 사상의 연원은 북인의 학풍을 가지고 남인에 합류하였던 북인계 근기남인에 있다고 볼 수 있다.

Bangyae Yu, Hyeong-won(磻溪柳馨遠) is a pioneer of Silhak(實學) who has organized the pursuit of practicality into one academic by writing a vast work on institutional reform, Bangyesurok(磻溪隨錄). He lost his father as a child due to the treasonable plot cases, and he did not have any special School ties or a relationship in which one surely inherited lessons from his teacher. He had never been in government service. Nevertheless, what was the background for his writing a masterpiece called Bangyesurok, which envisions the whole state management? It was Bukin s academic traditions and practical perspective that was injected into Yu, Hyung-won by his uncle Lee, Won-jin(李元鎭) and uncle Kim, Sye-ryeom(金世濂). The two, who were Bunkin-affiliated Geunki-namin officials, were thoroughly equipped with practical skills. And besides, they were men of both literary and martialism. They inherited the methods of great erudition and ancient law studies, which the previous generations such as Han, Baek-gyeom and Lee, Su-kwang, developed by taking the studies of Bukin and Namin evenly. They also inherited the tradition of naturalism, the ideology of focusing on the rule of law and national centralism, which were Bukin s academic traditions. Those were collected by Yu, Hyeong-won, the next generation. The origin of Yu, Hyeong-won s Studies and Ideas can be attributed to a Bunkin-affiliated Geunki-namin who joined the Namin with a Bukin s academic traditions.
