Status and Improvement of Major Spaces in Temporary Shelter for Disaster Victims Due to the Earthquake in Pohang

This study aims to identify problems and actual needs for each space within the temporary shelter for disaster victims and suggest to improve the shelter space plan focusing on the users. Literature review and in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data, and content analysis and brainstorming were applied for the analysis. Findings are as follows; First, the temporary shelter in Pohang was found to have problems related to kitchen, laundry, and hot water facilities because the building was not originally constructed for shelter use. Second, most of the disaster victims staying in the temporary shelter in Pohang were the elderly, and accordingly, problems such as reduced accessibility due to lack of parking space and frequent use of stairs to access the shelter were seen. Third, the temporary shelter in Pohang was originally a gymnasium that was prepared for a temporary stay of one month. However, from the second field study, it was confirmed that the victims stayed in the shelter for more than 4 months on average. Therefore, in the future, various types of disaster shelter should be developed considering the possible evacuation period, such as emergency shelter for 2-3 days or a temporary shelter capable of supporting daily activities for a long period of evacuation.
