This study aims to examine the effect of portfolio-based instruction on Korean EFL high school students’ writing ability, with a focus on the process-oriented approach. The research questions are: 1) Is there an improvement in students’ English writing ability after portfolio-based instruction?; and 2) Is there a change in students’ perception about English writing after being exposed to portfolio-based instruction? The participants of the study were 113 high-school students. The quantitative data from the 5-point Likert scale questions were analyzed using SPSS 25. The qualitative data from the survey underwent grounded theory analysis. The data analysis revealed: 1) the participants have improved in their overall writing abilities related to the sub-skills of argument, vocabulary and grammar; and 2) they have perceived that writing skill is important and that this portfolio-based instruction has been useful in improving their writing ability.
