Transcultural Theory in the Context of Russian Intellectual History

포스트모던 시대 이후의 새로운 문화적 지층에 관심을 갖는 러시아 출신 문화학자 미하일 엡슈테인(Mikhail N. Epstein, 1950-)은 오늘날의 현실을 ‘프로토(proto-)’의 패러다임으로 새로이 규정해야 하며, 현실의 예측불가능하고 진지한 측면에 주목할 것을 강조한다. 과학기술 발전에 힘입어 인간능력의 신장을 가져올 ‘포스트휴먼(Posthuman)’ 현상, 정보생산의 기하학적 증가로 인해 새로이 대두하는 인간 소외 현상, 초국적 금융자본과 글로벌리즘, 이민과 이주노동, 이념, 종교, 민족 다원주의 현상이 현대문화에 대한 그의 주요 관심영역이다. 엡슈테인이 제안하는 트랜스컬처적 ‘문화연구’는 문화 속에 녹아있는, 그러면서도 서로의 영역에 대해 알지 못한 채 자기 고유의 영역에서 발전해나가는 개별 요소들(테크놀로지, 과학, 직업, 예술, 신념체계)을 통합하는 근본적인 문화적 무의식을 중점적인 연구대상으로 한다. ‘트랜스컬처’ 개념은 여러 차원의 기능을 지니는바, “창조적 소통의 모델”이면서, 또한 자연과 문화의 이중의 매듭에서 동시에 “해방되어 있는” 인간의 독특한 존재상황을 가리키는 의미이기도 하다. 본 논문은 ‘공간적 탈중심성’을 러시아 문화이론의 지적 기원으로 가정하면서, 러시아 (보다 좁게는 소비에트) 문화환경에서 자생적으로 태동한 문화상호작용의 최신 이론 가운데 하나인 엡슈테인의 트랜스컬처 이론의 구조와 내용을 이론적, 윤리학적, 실천적 측면으로 나누어 분석하고자 한다. 또한 본격적 논의에 앞서 그것이 발원한 러시아 고유의 문화적 토양이 되는 문학적, 문화철학적 전통과의 연관성을 살펴보고자 한다. 아울러 결론에서는 트랜스컬처 현상을 초국가간 문화전이현상이나 문화혼융 등 문화주의로만 국한시킬 경우 엡슈테인의 이론이 노정할 수밖에 없는 한계에 대해 지적하고자 한다.

This paper aims to provide an analysis of the whole structure of the theory of Transculturalism by a Russian born American cultural theorist Mikhail N. Epstein and to reveal various meanings of its important concepts, in particular by categorizing them into theoretical, ethical, practical aspects, and by tracing its origin in Russian intellectual soil. The transcultural theory proposed by Epstein as its main objectives of research deals with the so called cultural unconscious combining all individual sectors in society(technology, science, art, belief systems), each of which develops itself within unitary culture not knowing each other s existence. The transcultural model proposed by Epstein has many implications within itself such as the visions of creative communication and our ideal state of being, i.e. our being set free from the double restraints of nature and culture itself. In this conceptual scheme we can witness the great influence of philosophical thinking by another Russian thinker Mikhail Bakhtin on him. Meanwhile, as far as Epstein s concept of Transculture is concerned, it still remains unclear whether it really relates to the social practices themselves, or it just aspires to a cultural ideal. I think those questions need to be answered in his future writings.
