An Estimation of Environment - Friendly Leisure Demand and Development of Current Tasks

The purposes of this paper are to investigate the changes of leisure demand and travel pattern, together with anticipated problems by introduction of the five day week work, and to provide environmental friendly tourism policies for a better quality of life of the Koreans. Active economic development and restructured industries in Korea make strong and diversified social needs to policy makers. One of them is the reduction of legal work time. So, the Korean government is planning to gradually introduce the five-day workweek in the late year 2002 to improve the quality of life of Koreans. The impacts will be various, including social and economic effects. In particular, environmental-friendly leisure demand will have a great influences by an expansion of leisure time in terms of work-hours reduction. In order to cope with the needs, we can make some propositions to policy-maker. First, developing diversified cultural contents. Second, guaranteeing stable disposable income. Third, constructing administrative and supporting system. Fourth, seeking a development of ecological rural tourism. And finally, the policy should consider faced new social change and the complexity of the problem and the solution. In conjunction with anticipated problems, tourism policies should focus on the expansion of tourism related facilities.
