Ikonoku s Koreatown in Osaka as a home of Korean Culture

일본에서의 ‘한류 붐’은 갑자기 나타난 현상이 아니다. 1945년 이후 국교가 단절된 시기에도 당시 60만 재일코리언들의 집거지인 코리아타운을 중심으로 일본 내에서 끊임없이 한국문화를 발신하며, 그 토대를 형성해 왔다. 그리고 재일코리언은 그 토대 위에 한국문화를 확장시키고 발전시키기 위해 노력해 왔다. 일본인들이 최근 몇 년 사이에 한류 붐에 편승하여 비로소 ‘김치(기무치)’나 비빔밥에 눈뜬 것은 아니다. 현재 일본 전국에 산재하는 8,000여 개의 야키니쿠야(한국식 불고기집)를 통해 일본인들이 수십 년 전부터 한국의 맛에 익숙해진 측면을 무시할 수 없다. 일본인들이야말로 한국음식에 가장 친숙한 외국인이었던 것이다. 이러한 문화이동의 수맥에는 재일코리언의 존재가 있었던 것은 물론이다. 재일코리언들의 한국음식은 물론 한국문화를 둘러싼 노력으로, 2004년 이후부터 일어나기 시작한 “한류”를 지탱하는 중심역할을 담당해 왔으며, 한국문화 정보발신지로써 존재해 왔다. 본고는 한류의 지속화와 한스타일의 성공적인 추진을 위해서도 700만 해외 동포의 집단 거주지인 코리아타운이 한국문화와 세계문화를 이어주는 매개 장소로써, 또 한국의 문화콘텐츠가 현지문화로 정착되는 과정에 없어서는 안 될 소중한 곳으로 재인식하는데 중요한 시사점을 줄 것이다.

The boom of Korean Wave has not emerged all of a sudden in Japan. Despite the breakoff of diplomatic relations with South Korea right after 1945, around 600,000 Korean-Japanese people gathering in Koreatown have continuously taken a pivotal role in spreading Korean culture with the place as the center and have formed the basis from which Korean Wave can grow. And they have put a lot of efforts to expand and to develop Korean culture from the pedestal. The Japanese people had already gotten exposed to the taste of some Korean dishes such as Kimchi or Bibimbap long before Korean Wave has recently landed on the Japanese Islands. Today, more than 8,000 yakinikuyas (Korean-style bulgogi restaurants) are dispersed over the country and most of Japanese people have been regular customers of the restaurants. So, they have become very much used to Korean food for over decades and have enjoyed the Korean food the most. Due to the Korean-Japanese people s endeavor, today s Korean Wave could have emerged as the mainstream of pop culture in Japan. Owing to the efforts of the Korean-Japanese for Korean food culture as well as Korean culture, the Koreatown in Ikuno-ku, Osaka has been playing a vital role to sustain the Korean Wave which has started to rise since 2004, and it has been a great source of offering information on Korean culture. In order to maintain Korean Wave and to successfully push forward HanStyle, i.e. the common name embraced from Korean traditional clothes, food, house, alphabet, paper to music, the Koreatowns all over the world will be significant parts to connect Korean culture and various cultures of the whole world, and also they will be necessary for the cultural content of Korea to get permeated into local cultures throughout the world.
