꼭두각시놀이의 현대적 수용에 대한 연구

A Study on the Modern Acceptance of the Puppet Play - With a Focus on Stage Design

꼭두각시놀이는 유일하게 전승되고 있는 전통 인형극으로 현재 남사당패에 의해 그 맥이 이어지고 있다. 전통 인형극이 그 나라를 대표하는 대중적인 공연예술로 자리 잡고 있는 동, 서양의 여러 나라들과 달리 우리나라를 대표하는 전통 인형극인 꼭두각시놀이는 대중화된 공연으로 발전하지 못했다. 우리의 전통 인형극인 꼭두각시놀이가 관객의 외면을 받는 이유는 시대의 변화를 수용하지 못하고 보존과 유지에만 치우친 까닭이다. 꼭두각시놀이가 우리나라를 대표하는 인형극으로 대중적인 공연예술이 되기 위해서는 전통과 독창성을 유지하면서 현대적으로 재창조하려는 노력이 요구된다. 이러한 시도의 하나로 현재 꼭두각시놀이의 무대디자인에 있어서 취약한 시각적요소를 새롭고 현대적인 무대디자인의 도입을 통해 실제 꼭두각시놀이 공연에 활용할 수 있는 무대디자인을 제시하고자 한다. 이 논문은 꼭두각시놀이 공연의 전체분위기에 어울리며 조화를 이룰 수 있는 무대디자인 이미지 창출을 위해 작품 분석과 장면 분석, 인물캐릭터에 대한 연구가 선행 되었고 이러한 분석 작업을 토대로 이동식 무대 배경막의 사용과 전통적인 회화 기법을 응용한 작화를 제안하고 디자인 작업을 하였다. 또한 공연의 시각적 완성도를 높이기 위한 현실적이고 실현 가능한 방법으로 현대적 무대디자인의 도입을 제안 하였다. 꼭두각시놀이가 한국을 대표하는 공연예술로 새롭게 자리매김 하기 위해서는 시각적 부분뿐 아니라 공연전반에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 이루어져야 한다.

The puppet play is the only traditional puppet drama whose transmission has continued today. Currently the Namsadang keeps it pulsation going. In South Korea unlike other countries in Orient and West where a traditional puppet drama has been established as a popular performance art to represent the country, the puppet play has not been popularized. The traditional puppet play has been neglected by the audience because it has failed to embrace the changes of the times and been heavily inclined only towards conservation and maintenance. They should make efforts to reinvent it in a modern fashion while keeping its heritage and originality intact in order to see the puppet play representing the country becoming a popular performance art. As part of such efforts, this study proposed the introduction of modern stage design concept to the stage of the puppet play with weak visual elements, as well as a stage design work to express the puppet play well for actual performance. The investigator analyzed the work and its scenes and examined the characters in order to create stage design images to strike harmony with the overall atmosphere of the work. Based on the analysis results, the investigator proposed the use of a movable stage screen and paintings according to the traditional painting techniques and worked on the design.
