이 글은 沈樂洙(1739~1799)의 ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣에 관한 연구이다. 심낙수는 그간 역사학 분야, 특히 조선 후기 정치사 분야에서 중요하게 거론되었으며, 18세기 老論의 時派와 僻派의 分岐에서 시파의 입장을 대표하는 宗匠의 위치에 있는 인물이다. 기존에 연구된 ｢定辨錄｣과 함께 심낙수의 중요한 저술로 손꼽을 수 있는 자료로 『恩坡散稿』 권8에 실려 있는 ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣이 있는데, 조선 후기 당쟁사를 연구하는 데 있어 중요한 사료이다. 아울러 ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣은 조선 후기 史論과 史論 산문의 범주에서 볼 때에 문학적인 측면에서 지니는 가치 역시 적지 않다. 우선 문체적 특징과 형식적인 측면을 보자면 ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣은 여타의 사론 산문 및 사론과 유사하다. 그러나 이전 시대의 인물이 아니라 당대의 인물을 대상으로 忠逆을 구분하는 심낙수의 선택 기준, 자신의 경험 및 인물과 관련된 일화와 중요 사건을 통해 인물을 설명하는 방식, 철저히 토역론에 입각하여 인물을 평가하는 심낙수의 일관적인 태도는 여타의 사론 산문 및 사론과 구별되는 변별점이다. 그에 더하여 <叙純忠傳>과 <叙黨逆列傳>은 비교적 단편임에도 당파 및 忠逆과 관련한 심낙수의 立論과 史實의 해석 및 논증이 돋보이는 작품으로, 조선 후기 사론 산문의 범주에서도 주목할 만한 작품이다. 사료적인 측면으로 보자면 ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣은 철저히 노론 시파의 토역론을 대변하는 당론서이다. 또 심낙수가 ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣을 저술하며 지향한 충역의 기준은 ｢定辨錄序｣에서 ‘백년의 是非를 정하고 일세의 忠逆을 변별하기 위한 것’이라고 말했던 입장과 동일하다. ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣은 당시 정국의 주요 현안이나 주요 사건에 있어 ｢정변록｣의 내용과 겹치는 부분이 많다. 그러나 ｢정변록｣이 영･정조대에 사도세자와 정조를 둘러싸고 일어난 사건의 전모를 상세히 알려주는 사료로서의 가치를 지닌 반면, ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣은 영･정조대 정치사 연구와 주요사건을 둘러싼 인물의 상호관계를 파악하는데 중요한 자료이며, 당대의 정국 동향과 대립 구도를 시파의 입장에서 이해하는데 분명한 근거를 제시해주는 사료로서 가치가 있다. 뿐만 아니라 ｢순충열전｣과 ｢당역열전｣은 『조선왕조실록』이나 『승정원일기』 등 관찬 역사서에서는 언급되지 않은 각 당파의 내부동향까지 살펴볼 수 있어 이 시대에 발생한 주요 정치적 사건의 내막이나 이를 둘러싼 政爭 속에 가려져 있는 맥락을 이해하는 데에 꼭 필요한 유일한 사료라는 데에 큰 의의가 있다.
This study examines [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon(純忠列傳)] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon(黨逆列傳)] of Naksu Shim(1739~1799). Shim has been mentioned as an important figure in history, especially in political history of the late Joseon Dynasty. Shim was also a master representing Shipa Party among Shipa Party(時派) and Byeokpa Party(僻派) of Noron(老論) in 18th century. [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] included in 8th volume of Eun Pa San Go(恩坡散稿) are regarded as the important writings of Shim together with previously researched Jeong Byeon Rok(定辨錄). [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] are important historical data for studying the history of political struggle during late Joseon Dynasty. In addition, considering from the aspect of historical essay(史論), [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] hold significant literary value. Regarding characteristics of writing style and form, [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] have similar writing style and form historical essay. However, Shim’s criteria for dividing loyal subjects and traitors of the time instead of former era, the way how Shim explains about the figures based on his own experience, related episodes, and related important events, and Shim’s consistent attitude in evaluating the figures based on To Yeok Ron (Theory on Expedition of Traitor) thoroughly are differentiated from other historical essays. In addition, while [Seo Sun Chung Jeon(叙純忠傳)] and [Seo Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon(叙黨逆列傳) are relatively short, Shim’s argument on party, loyal subjects, and traitors and his interpretation and demonstration on historical facts are remarkable. Thus, Seo Sun Chung Jeon and Seo Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon are noteworthy in the category of historical essays during late Joseon Dynasty. Considering from the aspect of historical data, [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] are party position manuals(黨論書) that thoroughly represent Theory on Expedition of Traitor by Noron’s Shipa Party. Also, the criteria that Shim pursued while writing [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] coincide with Shim’s idea of ‘Deciding the right and wrong for one hundred year and differentiating royal subject and traitor of the time’ in [Jeong Byeon Rok]. In regard to main pending issues and major events in political situation, [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] had overlapping contents with Jeong Byeon Rok. However, while Jeong Byeon Rok holds value as a historical data with detailed description on incident over Prince Sado and King Jeongjo during the period of King Yeongjo and Jeongjo, [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] hold value as important materials for identifying the political history during the period of King Yeongjo and Jeongjo and relationship between figures in the main events and for suggesting the clear evidence in understanding the political situation and conflicting structure in the position of Shipa Party. Furthermore, [Sun Chung Yeol Jeon] and [Dang Yeok Yeol Jeon] hold huge significance as the only historical data essential for understanding the side stories of main political events and contexts over political strife by describing the internal movement of each party which is not mentioned in government-complied historical books such as [The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty] or [Diaries of the Royal Secretariat].
