When Evangelicalism Meets Science - Was “Evolution” Merely Excluded by the Anglo-American Evangelical Perspective?

본문은 ‘진화’라는 주제를 중심으로 영미권의 복음주의 권역의 다윈주의 수용에 대해 고찰했던 아일랜드 지리학자 리빙스턴(D. N. Livingstone)의 관점에 따라 진화론에 대한 수용에서 나타난 다양한 양상과 그 함의에 대해 고찰하고 있다. 미국의 창조 과학계와 진화론의 갈등이 본격화되었던 20세기 후반 이 주제를 다루면서 리빙스턴은 2014년 기포드강연을 통해 진화론을 둘러싼 신학계와 과학계의 논쟁은 지리적 역사적 측면에서의 다양한 관찰이 필요한 주제라는 점을 부각시킨다. 그는 특별히 19세기 초 이후 영미권 장로교의 진영에서 관찰되는 진화론 수용 양상에 대해 공시적 및 통시적 시점으로 다각적 분석을 시도하고 있다. 이 과정에서 그는 특히 과학에 대한 개방적 자세와 분명한 철학적 배경에 따라 진화의 주장에 대해 열린 대화를 수용했던 토론토 학파 및 구 프린스턴 학파의 학문적 논의에 대해 집중적으로 조명하고 있다. 이러한 논의를 통해 리빙스턴은 ‘복음주의’라고 하는 관점과 철저한 성서 중심주의를 표방했던 미국 장로교의 신학자들이 생각보다 과감한 진화에 대한 폭넓은 관점을 가지고 있었던 점을 부각시키면서 지성적 대화를 수행해나가는 오늘날의 기독교 신앙과 과학이 해묵은 주제를 중심으로 소모적인 논쟁을 전개하기보다 진일보된 논의를 전개하기 위한 발걸음을 내디뎌야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 이와 같은 관점은 활발한 지성적 논의가 전개되는 21세기의 현실 속에서 보다 과감한 간학문적 대화를 수행해야 할 한국의 기독교 신학계에 중요한 지침을 제공해 주는 시각으로 받아들일 수 있다.

This study examines the reception of the theory of evolution and its implications in the Anglo-American evangelical theology, based on the perspective of Irish geographer D. N. Livingstone, with analysis of his Gifford lectures on this theme. Looking at the reception of evolutionism in the Anglo- American theological world from the early 19th century to the late 20th century, Livingstone emphasizes that the theological and scientific debate over evolution is not a matter of truth itself but a dynamic subject which requires examinations on various levels involving the acceptance of particular scientific concepts. With this as the main point of view, he attempts to analyze from various angles the history of the reception of evolutionism by Presbyterian Church in Anglo-American regions in the 19th century, with a synchronic and diachronic perspective. In this process, he focuses on the debates of the theologians of the “old Princeton school”, such as J. McCosh, C. Hodge, and B. B. Warfield, who welcomed open dialogues about evolutionism based on a philosophical background centered on the Scottish Common Sense Realism. In conclusion, he argues that it is necessary to re-examine the discussion of the evolutionism carried out by the evangelical tradition in order to accomplish an advanced dialogue between Christianity and science.
