Depression and Suicidal Ideation among Mothers of Children with Intellectual Disability: An Examination of Moderating Effect of Social Support

본 연구의 목적은 지적 장애아동 어머니들의 우울증과 사회적 지지가 자살생각에 어떤영향을 미치는지 검증하고자 하였다. 또한 사회적 지지가 우울증과 자살생각 간의 관계에서 완충효과가 있는지를 검증하고자 하였다. 서울 및 경기도 용인시에 거주하는 지적장애아동을 둔 어머니들 285명을 대상으로 분석하였다. 본 연구결과는 우울이 증가할수록지적 장애아동의 어머니들의 자살생각 수준이 높이지는 것으로 확인할 수 있었다. 사회적지지는 자살생각과 부적 관계가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 즉 사회적 지지 수준이 높아질수록 자살생각은 낮아지는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한, 사회적 지지는 우울과 자살생각 사이에서 완충효과가 있는 것을 확인되었다. 사회적 지지 망을 통한 사회적 지지는 지적 장애아동을 둔 어머니들의 자살생각으로부터 보호해주는 요인임을 본 연구를 결과를 통해 알 수있다. 끝으로 지적 장애아동을 둔 어머니들을 위한 임상적 함의와 정책적 함의를 제공하고자 한다.

This study investigated the impact of depression and social support on suicidal ideation among mothers of children with intellectual disability. Another purpose of this study was to test the role of social support in relationship between depression and suicidal ideation. A total of 285 mothers of children with intellectual disability completed the survey. The results showed increased depression is associated with a high level of suicidal ideation. Also, social support is negatively associated with suicidal ideation. This study also examined whether social support moderates the effects of depression and suicidal ideation. There was evidence in favor of the moderating role of social support. Building social support could be one of the best ways for protecting mothers from suicidal thinking. Clinical and policy implications for this study will be discussed for mothers of children with intellectual disability.
