류영모(柳永模)의 영성론과 그 기원

The Origin of Ryu Youngmo’ Spiritualism - life, sum, holy spirit

류영모의 글은 난해하고 생경하다. 글의 행간에서 사상적 원천을 헤아리기 곤란할 뿐만 아니라, 아주 독특한 음독과 조어 방식으로 인해 일종의 난독 경험을 피할 수 없다. 그럼에도 함석헌에게 이어진 생명주의의 영향을 다시 거슬러 류영모를 재독하는 것은 한국 토착지성의 계보와 그 의미를 상론하는 데에 불가피한 쟁점이다. 숨 사상의 담론적 맥락을 되짚어 가면, 류영모의 영성론이 다이쇼 생명주의 담론의 자장 속에서 육성된 정신의 한 결산임을 부정하기 힘들다. 다른 한편, 숨에 관해 범신론적 신비주의 차원에서 논하는 것과 지극히 계량화된 형태로 논하는 것 사이에서 류영모는 어떤 이율배반을 느끼지 않는다. 한 번의 숨을 기본 단위로 해서 지구 대기의 순환을 상론하는 것도, 평생에 걸쳐 날수를 헤아리는 것도 물론 류영모 개인의 취향이기도 하겠지만, 달리 보면 영성이 계량화되는 형태로 스스로를 입증하는 방식, 즉 ‘물화된 영성’의 방증이라 할 수도 있다.

Ryu Youngmo’s essays are convoluted and unfamiliar. It is very difficult to understand the ideological sources between the lines, moreover his unique phonetic transcription and word-formation mode make a sort of desultory reading. Nevertheless, reading essays of Ryu Youngmo and his disciple Ham Seokhun in the context of life discourse is inevitable to discuss the genealogy and its meaning of indigenous intelligence in Korea. By tracking the discursive context of sum ] thought, we’re hard to deny that Ryu Youngmo’ spiritualism has its origin from life discourse in Taisho Democracy. On the other hand, he didn’t feel contradictions between discussing on sum in a quantified way and discussing it in Pantheistic mysticism. Explicating atmospheric circulation with sum as the basic unit, and counting the days he have lived for a lifetime is also Ryu Youngmo’s taste. But looking differently, it is a disproving of reified spirituality that prove oneself in a quantified way.
