A previous study of dolmen society in Youngnam province - On the Daegu and Gyoungsan area

지석묘의 하부구조는 단위지역별로 다양한 형태의 묘형이 확인되고 있다. 지석묘의 형식은 매장주체부의 레벨을 가장 커다란 속성으로 설정하여 형식분류하면, 먼저 지하식(Ⅰ형), 지상식(Ⅱ형)으로 크게 대별된다. 지하식은 다시 지하식석곽형 (ⅠA형)과 지하식석관형(ⅠB형)으로, 지상식 역시 지상식석관형(ⅡA형)과 지상식석관형(ⅡB형)으로 구분된다. 이밖에 부가되는 속성은 하부구조의 형태(곽ㆍ곽), 개석, 포석, 바닥시설 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 지석묘축조기의 사회가 갈등이나 전투가 빈번한 사회가 아니라는 몇 가지 적극적인 고고학적 증거가 확인된다. 첫째, 가장 일반적인 방어시설로 인식되고 있는 성곽이 전혀 찾아지지 않는다는 점. 둘째, 환호 역시 방어시설로 보기에는 여러 가지 문제점이 노출된다는 점. 셋째, 지석묘 축조에는 많은 노동력과 시간, 그리고 비용이 요구된다는 점. 따라서 집단간의 갈등이 빈번한 사회에서는 많은 노동력의 동원이 불가능하다는 점 등이다. 지석묘사회는 묘형의 다양성으로 보아 원칙적으로는 단위지역별로 자족적인 사회였음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 개별 묘역을 서로 연접하여 조성하는 등 이미 계획된 묘의 배치, 배장 형태로 축조된 묘, 엄격하게 절제된 묘의 부장품 등으로 보아 지석묘는 집단내 상위계층과 그들 가족의 묘였던 것으로 판단된다.

The underground structure of the dolmen can be classified into three types largely; underground burial, ground-level burial, pit burial. The underground burial type can be divided into the underground stone chamber burial and the underground stone cist burial. The ground-level burial can be divided into the ground-level stone chamber burial and the ground-level stone cist burial. It is presumed that the dolmen society was in a very stable situation with few social conflict and external war. This presumption is supported by such archaeological evidences: 1) The dolmen is usually located on the gorge, the river mouth, or along with the river, with no consideration for defence. 2) There is no defensive facility like a defensive wall around the dolmen. It is uncertain that the ditch surrounding the dolmen is a defensive facility. 3) The dolmen construction requires much labor force and a long construction period. It is impossible to mobilize much labor force when the society is in an unstable situation. It is presumed that the dolmen society was the self-sustained society and the dolmen was for the elite class. It is also presumed that the elite class had multi-lineage as shown in examples of dolmens in Sang-dong, Daegu and Siji-dong, Kyungsan.
