한반도의 무문토기문화는 지역성을 가진 것으로 알려져 있다. 포항-경주-울산 지방에서도 뚜렷한 지역성이 확인되는데, 검단리식 토기와 울산식 주거지로 특징 지워진다. 울산식 주거지는 방형 또는 장방형의 평면형태이면서 벽주구와 배수구, 무시설식 노지 등이 갖추어진 것이 특징이다. 이 밖에 울산식 주거지의 특징으로 주거지의 규모 확장을 도모한 증축의 흔적이 확인된다는 점을 들 수 있다. 울산식 주거지의 증축은양방향증축형과단방향증측형으로 구분된다. 양방향증축은 주거지 주혈배치의 변화가 없는 반면, 단방향증축은 주혈배치의 변화가 있는 증축방법이다. 울산식 주거지의 증축면적은 다양한데, 크게 5㎡, 10㎡, 16㎡, 22㎡ 정도로 나누어진다. 일인당 평균주거면적을 4.5㎡로 상정했을 때, 5㎡ 확장은 1인, 10㎡는 2인, 16㎡는 3～4인, 22㎡는 4～5인의 가족구성원이 증가했을 경우로 추정된다. 울산식 주거지의 면적 분포는 5～40㎡까지로 다양하며, 10～20㎡ 사이의 주거지가 가장 많다. 이렇게 울산식 주거지의 면적분포가 다양하고 증축한 주거지가 확인되는 현상은 울산식 주거의 가족구성원 수가 매우 유동적이었다는 것을 의미한다.

Mumun Pottery Period (c. 1500-300 B.C.) culture in the Korean Peninsula had different regional expressions. Clear regional differences are characterized by Geomdan-ni-type pottery and Ulsan-type pit-houses in the region connecting the modern cities of Pohang, Gyeongju, and Ulsan. Ulsan-type pit-houses are characterized by square or rectangle plan-shapes, wall ditches, drainage ditches, and hearths. Importantly, evidence of rebuilding, more specifically the expansion or enlargement of pit-houses, has been discovered.Two kinds of enlargement can be discerned: expansion of one side of the pit-house and expansion of both sides of the pit-house. When one side of the pit-house was enlarged, the arrangement of poles had to be altered. However, when both sides of the pit-house were expanded, the arrangement of poles remained the same. The size of expanded areas vary and are classified as follows: 5㎡, 10㎡, 16㎡ and 22㎡. If we consider that the space for a single person s use in Korean pit-houses is approximately 5㎡, then the basic expansion unit would be 5㎡ per person. The roofed area of pit-houses ranges widely from 5㎡ to 40㎡, but is concentrated from 10㎡ to 20㎡. The fact that pit-house enlargement occurred regularly confirms that family and/or household structure changed relatively easily.
