Development and the Meaning of Animal Shaped Belthooks in Southern Korean Peninsula

Animal shaped belthooks are mainly excavated from wooden coffins and wooden-chamber tombs in Proto- Three Kingdoms Period, and is distributed only in southeastern and middle-eastern areas, The Korean Peninsula. It was investigated from Japanese colonial era up to the present. Its excavation amounts have been increased. As a result of trying to classify forms focusing on excavations, six forms were introduced. Based on this, we set as 3 stages. First stage is an emerging period and animal shaped belthooks were appeared at Geumho river watershed and is distributed to Gyeongju region. Second stage is the one spreading into Gimhae and middlewestern area. Tiger shaped belthooks and horse shaped belthooks were all spread within south-eastern area and only horse shped belthooks were spread into middle-western area. 3-1 stage is the period which lattice door emerged and regionalization was made. Its characteristic is that it is emerged only in middle-western area. 3-2 stage is the one which regionalized animal shaped belthooks were degenerated and in every middle-western region, degenerating form was emerged. By 3-2 stage, even in middle-western area, animal shaped belthooks was disappeared, which is seemed to be a result of subjugation of Baekje Dynasty to Mahan Dynasty. It is verified that animal shaped belthooks were developed from south-eastern area into middle-western area. And regional area can be divided into south-eastern area and middle-western area. What we can know from the division of regional area is that animal shaped belthooks in both areas have many difficulties. The reason of dividing regional area like such is that animal shaped belthooks in middle-western area was emerged by imitating horse shaped belthooks in south-eastern area and as it was regionalized, it created the form in middle-western area. In addition, Spreading from middle-western area into Sangju region, south-eastern area was regarded as a product not by self-manufacturing at Sangju region but by the exchange with middle-western area.
